Weekly Picks: Robinson Crusoe Written Anew for Children by James Baldwin

Posted on October 13, 2006 by | Posted in Uncategorized, Weekly Picks | Comments: Comments Off on Weekly Picks: Robinson Crusoe Written Anew for Children by James Baldwin

Read by Denny Sayers.

Denny’s reading of “Robinson Crusoe Written Anew for Children” is a great introduction to some of our children’s literature at LibriVox. He does a great job drawing the listener into the story. This classic story has been adapted for children and Denny’s love of children comes through in how he tells the story. It is written in the first person and Denny reads as though he is Crusoe himself to further bring the story alive.

LibriVox listed on Gutenberg pages

Posted on October 6, 2006 by | Posted in News, site & admin | Comments: 7 Comments on LibriVox listed on Gutenberg pages

A wonderful new development: LibriVox recordings are starting to be added to Project Gutenberg’s catalog pages. It’s just getting started, and kinks are getting worked out of the process, but here is the official first gutenberg catalog page, with LibriVox audio, provided in many different fomats, including speex!

Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz by L. Frank Baum

Wonderful.

This was something we had talked about many months ago with Gutenberg, but it’s taken a while to happen, and was a real surprise when we were told, “it has been done.”

Thanks to Gutenberg for all the work they have done that allows us to do what they do; thanks to Greg Newby for supporting LibriVox; and thanks to Josh Hutchinson for doing the back-end work.

Weekly Picks: Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

Posted on October 6, 2006 by | Posted in Uncategorized, Weekly Picks | Comments: 1 Comment on Weekly Picks: Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

Read by Kristin LeMoine (Luoma).

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad has been interperted many different ways since its publication in 1899. It has been the inspiration for T.S. Eliot’s “The Hollow Men” and Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocolypse Now. Given the varying reactions to the text, this reading by Kristin avoids the potential pitfalls of over-interpertation, and allows the haunting story to emerge. Her careful pacing and enunciation reflect Conrad’s deliberate language. Kristin’s straightforward reading allows listeners to take their own journey through the depths of Conrad’s symbolism.
