Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson

Treasure Island is one of the great adventure stories in the English language, and a perfect starting point for anyone interested in studying the intricacies of “pirate literature” (often called PiLit). Buried treasure, buccaneers, high seas and scoundrels, courage and terror, this book has inspired many a young boy and girl to put a patch over their eye and cry “Ahoy matey!” … But it’s not just for kids: Robert Louis Stevenson is considered a classic prose stylist, writing clear evocative English that any aspiring writer would do well to study. And this crystal clear writing is put to wonderful effect, with the atmosphere and thrilling pacing, and a curious moral ambiguity that has kept Treasure Island on our shelves, and now in our mp3 players, for generations.

Next up (Monday): Treasure Island, Chapters 3-4 read by Gord Mackenzie.

LibriVox talk at FACiL (Montreal)

Posted on February 15, 2006 by | Posted in News | Comments: Comments Off on LibriVox talk at FACiL (Montreal)

I’ll be giving a talk at the next meeting of Montreal’s free-software group, FACiL, about LibriVox.

Date: February 16, 2006
Time: 18:00
Place: 550 rue Sherbrooke ouest, bureau 100. (Montreal)
Admission: FREE (of course).

The topic will be something like this:

Using Open Source Models for non-Software Projects: How LibriVox is Working.

The success of the Free Software/Open Source movement has proved the possibility and efficiency of a new way of doing things. Why does this model work in software, and how can it be applied in other non-software projects?

LibriVox.org, with 800+ volunteers around the world, is an example of such a project:

“LibriVox volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain, and then we release the audio files back onto the net (podcast, catalog, and torrent). Our objective is to make all books in the public domain available, for free, in audio format on the internet. LibriVox is a totally volunteer, free, public domain, open source project.”

If you’re a LibriVox volunteer or fan in Montreal on Thursday, it would be great to meet up.
