The Marrying of Ann Leete

Harley Granville-Barker (1877 - 1946)

A comedy with a serious vein running through it about the Leete family who are British rural gentry in 1799. Mr Carnaby Leete is a politician whose career is in trouble. He needs to save his position by marrying his youngest daughter, Ann, advantageously. His only son has married beneath him, and his older daughter's politically brilliant marriage is now in serious trouble. The play uses symbolism to give weight to the comedy and poses questions about the wisdom of marrying of a daughter solely for political gain. - Summary by Tchaikovsky
