Dissatisfied with his life of poverty, Peter Munk, a poor charcoal burner, summons an ancient spirit who rewards him with three wishes. His wealth is but short-lived and soon he faces ruin. To recover his riches, he makes a deal with a mysterious, evil force. In exchange for his heart, Peter receives again wealth and success, but is emotionally numb and without love and compassion.
