Giles Corey of the Salem Farms
Giles Corey was an English-born farmer who was "pressed to death" for refusing to enter a plea during the notorious Salem Witch Trials in 1692. His wife Martha was one of fourteen women hanged after the trials.
This verse drama was written in 1868 and published as one of Longfellow's New England Tragedies.
