Im ersten Teil (Das grüne Ufer; Gedichte 1-30) schreibt Paul Zech noch traditionelle Naturlyrik. Durch Liebeslyrik mit einem Hauch Erotik (Zwischenspiel: Gedichte 31-42) spannt er einen Bogen um am Ende zum Expressionismus (Das gebirgichte Ufer: Gedichte 43-72) überzugehen; wobei er, unter anderem, die Problematik der Industrialisierung seiner Zeit aufgreift.
