Qi Luo informs us of a great use for LibriVox, englishhaha.net

Audio files are sourced from your site. We processed them using our system to have audio and text hilighting played in Karaoke style. We will also add dictionary for every word. It will help to make them enjoyable by more people.

Sounds like a good way for people to follow along, especially for those learning English.

Sundown Lounge

Posted on November 13, 2006 by | Posted in News, on the web, Uncategorized | Comments: Comments Off on Sundown Lounge

Larry from the poetry podcast Sundown Lounge writes to tell us some LibriVox poems are in his latest show:

I have a section of the show called “Venue Verite” in which I occasionally visit local open mic poetry readings and record some of the poets for podsafe sharing with my global audience. This month I’m taking part in NaNoWriMo, so instead I’ve sampled some of the cool readings of public domain poems by Librivox members. The latest episode is no. 71, my post-election celebration.

I’m affiliated with Creative Commons, and I’ve taken pains to give the proper crediting, but I want to be sure, as well as give credits to the readers of the poems:

“O Captain! My Captain!,” by Walt Whitman, read by Ted McElroy
“Lawyers Know Too Much,” by Carl Sandburg, read by Alan Davis-Drake
“Ode 314,” by Rumi, read by Kayvan Sylvan

Please come check out the show and tell me what you think. I’m listed at iTunes, and my website is

Weekly Picks: War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells

Posted on November 3, 2006 by | Posted in Uncategorized, Weekly Picks | Comments: 3 Comments on Weekly Picks: War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells

Solo read by Rebecca.

Collaborative read by Stephan Möbius, Chris Goringe, Peter Yearsley, Joseph Morris, Kara Shallenberg, Mike Shapiro, Tony Gray, Kristin Luoma, Chip, Kathleen (Kathy) P. King, and Jean Crevier.

NOTE: “War of the Worlds” is under copyright until 2016 in the UK and EU. If you are in these juristictions, then downloading the LibriVox audio may be a breach of copyright law.

This week’s highlighted work is War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, presented in two different versions: a solo reading and a collaborative reading. In a solo reading, one person reads the entire book, just as in most commercial audiobooks. Collaboraborative readings reflect the distributed nature of the LibriVox community; readers select individual chapters or sections to read, then catalog the entire work together. Some listeners prefer the consistancy of the same reader for the entire book. Others enjoy hearing the diversity of reading styles and character interpertations. Many do not notice the performance at all, finding that once they get into the book’s world, the narrator fades into the background. Either way, you’re sure to find a version of this reading that you enjoy with these two works.

Listen

What is this? Every week the volunteers at Librivox pick a different recording to present to our listeners. The spotlighted recordings vary from week to week in order to call attention to the variety of works available here at Librivox and to show how much we appreciate all the effort and work our readers put into each project. The featured selection may be poetry, novels, short stories or non-fiction. All of them can be found within our growing catalog and are available for download. Want to learn more?
