LibriVox on Six Pixels of Separation

There’s an impromptu interview with me about LibriVox on Mitch Joel’s Six Pixels of Separation Podcast. The interview is right near the end, at 43:45.

In a nice, um, twist, the interview took place in the back stacks in the basement of the Atwater Library, where I serve on the Board. The books make for great sound dampers. I was pitching another project, the Atwater Digital Literacy Project to Mitch, and I convinced him to join the Advisory Committee.

The good news is that we were posted about on Lifehacker today…they had nice things to say. The bad news is that what with increased interest (Life Hacker, Boing Boing, and the March Madness email) we’ve had some trouble handling allt he traffic.

Some of the problems were due to WordPress reloading everything dynamically; and the other problem was with our new fancy dynamic catalog…the catalog searches a database, and generates a page based on results – which takes a lot more processing power than our previous “search” method, which involved ctrl-F and a static html page.

Anyway, Dan and Kri seem to have fixed all the problems for now. We appreciate your patience, and thank you for visiting… Would you like to record something for us? If so, visit our forum, and post a “Hello.”

There are a few mammoth projects in the LibriVox world that take extra effort and energy, and take a long long time to complete. Often these are important texts, dense and challenging to read, and complicated to manage, coordinate, and catalog. Many hands, voices and microphones usually touch these books before they finally see the light out here in public.

One such book is Darwin’s The Origin of Species. And we are proud to announce that this one is: COMPLETE.

So, don’t hesitate, visit the catalog page and download:

On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection
by Charles Darwin.

UPDATE: It’s Boing Boing’d.
