Proof-Listening

Posted on October 22, 2008 by | Posted in about LibriVox, For Volunteers, News | Comments: 6 Comments on Proof-Listening

Many people who are not comfortable recording for LibriVox help out in other ways. You might consider helping as a Proof-Listener, making sure that there are no technical problems with an audio file before it goes into the catalog. This includes repeats, badly edited sections, major stumbles, long silences and the like.

Because of the quirky nature of LibriVox (all readers are welcome, and we don’t judge style or accent) PLers are not there to evaluate the more subjective quality of a recording, so:

What types of errors should I NOT be listening?
Text content, reading style, speed, pronunciation, or accents. The LibriVox community values a wide variety of reading styles; what one person finds difficult to hear, another person may really enjoy. The interpretation of the reader is not for our proof-listeners to judge. If you are uncomfortable listening to a particular voice, feel free to return the section to the pool for another proof-listener to claim.

Would you like to help out proof-listening? Read up on it here, and look for the Listeners & Editors Wanted thread in the Forum.

THE LV WEEKLY SHORT STORY PODCAST
THE LV POETRY PODCAST

Just in time for your summer listening pleasure, two new LibriVox Podcasts are ready to jump into your iPods. A great way to sample the massive LV Catalog: weekly samples focusing specifically on poetry and short stories, updated every Saturday. But don’t worry, we won’t be running out of poems or short stories for a very long time. The Catalog has hundreds of each —and it’s growing everyday! Each podcast contains a link to the entire audiobook or collection.

Podcast feeds are available either from FeedBurner or iTunes:

Poetry via FeedBurner

Poetry via iTunes
Current episodes: 14

Short Stories via FeedBurner
Short Stories via iTunes
Current episodes: 123

As you might guess from current totals, the Short Story Podcast has been up longer than the one for Poetry. It has become a very popular podcast and Apple has continually featured it in the Literature section of iTunes.

If you’re interested, take a zoom over to the iTunes Store and do a search for “LibriVox.” You might be surprised to find 30 or more LV related podcasts, most of them from LV volunteers!

SFF Audio Throws Down the Gauntlet

Posted on November 13, 2006 by | Posted in For Volunteers, News | Comments: 1 Comment on SFF Audio Throws Down the Gauntlet

Jesse Willis over at SFF Audio offers up a challenge to audiobook makers: record some more public domain scifi. They’ve got a great list of Books that Ought to Be Recorded, including:

  • The Secret Of The Ninth Planet by Donald A. Wollheim
  • The Sky Is Falling by Lester Del Rey
  • Operation: Outer Space by Murray Leinster
  • The Door Through Space by Marion Zimmer Bradley
  • A Strange Manuscript Found In A Copper Cylindner by James De Mille
  • The Galaxy Primes by E.E. Doc Smith

I’m not sure about the public domain status of all of these, but they’ve been added to our Book Suggestions thread, and hopefully we’ll get some of them done to make Jesse happy.

Note to any SFF readers planning to take up the challenge: if you don’t mind having your work in the Public Domain, why not consider recording with us? Here’s how it all works: Volunteer for LibriVox
