These guys look likem kindred spirits:

New Assignment.Net is a non-profit site that tries to spark innovation in journalism by showing that open collaboration over the Internet among reporters, editors and large groups of users can produce high-quality work that serves the public interest, holds up under scrutiny, and builds trust.

And here is one of their projects:

Zero.NewsAssignment.net is “inspired by the open-source movement, this is an attempt to bring journalists together with people in the public who can help cover a story. It’s a collaboration among NewAssignment.Net, Wired, and those who choose to participate.”

LibriVox on Six Pixels of Separation

There’s an impromptu interview with me about LibriVox on Mitch Joel’s Six Pixels of Separation Podcast. The interview is right near the end, at 43:45.

In a nice, um, twist, the interview took place in the back stacks in the basement of the Atwater Library, where I serve on the Board. The books make for great sound dampers. I was pitching another project, the Atwater Digital Literacy Project to Mitch, and I convinced him to join the Advisory Committee.

Today, March 25 2007, is the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in Britain. In honor of this event, LibriVox volunteer CarlManchester organized a collaborative recording of The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano:

The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, written in 1789, is the autobiography of Olaudah Equiano. It discusses his time spent in slavery, serving primarily on galleys, documents his attempts at becoming an independent man through his study of the Bible, and his eventual success in gaining his own freedom and in business thereafter. The book contains an interesting discussion of slavery in West Africa and illustrates how the experience differs from the dehumanising slavery of the Americas. The Intereresting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano is also one of the first widely read slave narratives. (Summary from Wikipedia)

Great choice, Carl, and thanks for organizing this!
