thank you from a listener

And here’s a thank you note from a listener Justin in Kentucky:

I just read about LibriVox on Wired.com and I have just got to say “Thank you!” I wish I had found it much sooner. The thank you is from myself and from my grandmother. Nearly 12 years ago she went blind. She was about 65 when that happened and doesn’t have the ability to learn braile. She/I/our group (National Federation of the Blind: Murray, KY Chapter) have been searching for better ways to get audio books and tapes at a less expensive prices for our members (we range from about 25-50 from year to year). There is barely enough budget to supply a Thanksgiving and Christmas party each year. Our local library supplies a few titles but they are few and far between and the CDs and tapes seem to be abused and broken by those who check them out so they rarely work properly. There are also “radio stations” at an extremely high subsciption rate. With your site, I can direct our chapter, and hopefully more, to free, quality content. You are a blessing to my grandmother and all who can benefit from your work. Thanks again!

Wired.com on LibriVox

Posted on December 16, 2005 by | Posted in in the press, News | Comments: 2 Comments on Wired.com on LibriVox

The famous Wired News story about LibriVox finally came out. Though, I think I was a bit optimistic, I don’t think we’ll complete 30 recordings by the end of the year … unless some keeners come on board today and jump right in!

This summer, Hugh McGuire was searching for free audio books online from his home in Montreal. He didn’t find very much.

So McGuire launched LibriVox by recruiting amateur readers to create audio files of works of literature. The project now includes almost two dozen complete works, including Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Agent, Jack London’s The Call of the Wild and other classic novels and poems….

Chicago Sun Times made us their Click Here pick for Dec 6, 2005. Here’s what they said:

Download free audio books, such as Jack London’s The Call of the Wild or Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and listen to them on your Apple iPod or other digital music player. If you like to read aloud, volunteer to make some recordings for this volunteer site.
