Charles Wayland Towne (1875 - 1965)

Charles Wayland Towne was born in New Hampshire, and on graduation from Brown University joined the staff of the New York Times. During World War I, Towne handled entertainment for troops in France.

After retirement, Towne moved to Tucson, and building on his earlier newspaper career, wrote for national magazines. Often writing under the pen name of Gideon Wurdz, he also wrote both humorous and serious books, including George Peabody--American Philanthropist.
