Claudius Ferrand (1868 - 1930)
Father Claudius Ferrand (June 19, 1868 - October 4, 1930) was a French priest. He entered the Seminary of Foreign Missions and was ordained, destined for the Nagasaki mission in Japan. In 1892, Ferrand settled on the island of Kyushu. There he learned Japanese and helped the most destitute in remote rural districts. In 1899 he joined the Tokyo Mission. For eight years, he traveled around the world three times to raise money to build three student hostels for young Japanese people – Christian and non-Christian alike. In 1912 Ferrand was sent to Hong Kong. Finally, he reached Daegu in Korea (1913), where he died in 1930. First printed and published in French in Tokyo in 1901, Fables et légendes du Japon were distributed in France in 1903. Claudius Ferrand had collected, rewritten, copied, or invented these stories.
