Francisco Sellén (1838 - 1907)

Francisco Sellén was a Cuban author, poet, and translator. He fought for the independence of Cuba as part of the Reformist party and as a collaborator in the formation of the Cuban Revolutionary Party. In his literary career, he collaboratee with numerous journalistic publications and translated leading works from the German language. Likewise, he translated various dramas by Zacarías Werner and novels by Wilkie Collins, Robert L. Stevenson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and F. Barrett. Francisco Sellén wrote the dramatic poem "Hatuey", a work of notable value in Cuban literature. A cultured man and defender of independence, before dying he donated his large literary collection to the National Library of Cuba.
