Luther Newton Hayes (1883 - 1978)

The son of American missionaries, Luther Newton Hayes was born on April 19, 1883, in Soochow, China. Hayes worked in China, mostly with the YMCA, but also as an English tutor to the prime minister's grandson. After returning to the United States, Hayes worked at various universities as an administrator and at a museum in Plattsburgh, New York, as a curator. He served in the military during World War II. He wrote two books, The Great Wall of China and The Chinese Dragon. Hayes died in 1978.
