Joseph Ward Swain (1891 - 1971)

Joseph Ward Swain (December 16, 1891 - September 4, 1971) was an American historian. He studied in Paris in his university years, where he met Émile Durkheim and was asked to translate Formes élémentaires de la vie religieuse into English. WWI interrupted his studies. Much of his career after the war was devoted to teaching and writing textbooks.
