John W. Postgate (1851 - 1921)
John William Postgate was an English American playwright, novelist, literary critic, printer, reporter, editor, and publisher. He was born in Hartlepool, England, and he eventually moved to New York City in the United States, where he ultimately died at his home in Brooklyn. His career in newspapers saw him work at The New York Herald, The New York Sun, The American Mining News, and The New York Globe. Postgate wrote several detective novels in the 1880s. In the 1910s, he turned his attention to Shakespeare, writing a book of Shakespeare criticism as well as two dramatic parodies of Shakespeare’s plays.
