William Caruthers (1876 - 1958)
William Carruthers (April 12, 1876 - March 6, 1958) was an American newspaperman and editor. Born in Tennessee, he started to work as a reporter at age 14. He was admitted to the Tennessee bar at age 19, but soon returned to his first love, newspaper work. He served during the Spanish American War, and later when cruising in the Pacific, he became prisoner of Solomon Island cannibals, but was able to escape. He moved to California, where he edited a number of magazines and did ghost writing for politicians and others.
