Isaac Mason (1822 - )

In 1822 Isaac Mason was born in Maryland to a free father and a slave mother. In 1847 he escaped to Delaware. After living in Philadelphia, Massachusetts, and Canada, he went to Haiti as part of an emigration program designed to transport and establish African Americans in Haiti. After suffering from hunger and illness, Mason returned to the United States to expose the true conditions of the settlement. He published his autobiography, The Life of Isaac Mason, A Slave, in 1893.
