Edward A. Steiner (1866 - 1956)

Steiner (November 1, 1866 – June 30, 1956) was a Jewish-Slovak immigrant from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, educated in Vienna and Heidelberg. He immigrated to the US in 1886, converted to Christianity, and was a professor of Applied Christianity in Grinnell College in Iowa. He gained prominence in the Midwest for his preaching of the Social Gospel. He was influenced by a relationship with Leo Tolstoy, whom he visited a number of times in the years leading up to Tolstoy’s death.
