Arthur Knaap (1893 - 1938)

Arthur Knaap was the son of musician Otto Knaap. The eldest of three sons, volunteered from "a desire for adventure, the fever of battle and love of France" for the French Foreign Legion. During 1915 and 1916, he wrote letters to his family from the trenches. His father, seeing literary value in the letters, submitted them to De Nieuwe Gids.
