Barnet Phillips (1826 - 1905)

Barnet Phillips (7 November 1827 - April 8, 1905) was an American journalist and author. He spent much of his youth abroad, studying on the Continent, although he was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1847. He continued his studies in Paris, and was graduated in chemistry at a noted German school. He served in the Confederate army during the Civil War, and after the war published short stories and novels. In 1872 he joined the editorial staff of The New York Times, staying for more than thirty years until his death.
