Osyp Turiansky (1880 - 1933)

Osip V. Turiansky (1880-1933) - Ukrainian writer and literary critic, a teacher in secondary schools in Galicia. Turiansky made his literary debut in 1908 with novels in the almanac “Sichi” in Vienna. In the autumn of 1914 he was drafted into the Austrian army and sent to the Serbian-Austrian front. He was captured and sent to an internment camp on the Italian island of Elba. Turiansky recreated his experiences in Serbian captivity in the novel-poem "Beyond the Pain" (Поза межами болю) (1917). This work, written in the style of expressionism, became a prominent phenomenon of modern Ukrainian literature. Other works: story “Thought of a primeval forest” (Дума пралісу) (1922), "Son of the Land" (Син землі) (1933), a collection of short stories "The struggle for greatness" (Боротьба за великість), comedy "Slaves" (Раби) (1927), literary and critical essays.
