William Gunion Rutherford (1853 - 1907)

William Gunion Rutherford (17 July 1853 – 19 July 1907) was a Scottish scholar. He was born in Peeblesshire and educated at St Andrews and Balliol College, Oxford, where he graduated in natural science. His intention to enter medical profession was abandoned in favour of a scholastic career. From 1883 to 1901 he was Head Master of Westminster School; and his death deprived classical scholarship in the UK of one of its most brilliant modern representatives. He was also a Fellow of University College, Oxford for a time.
