iPhone Apps for LibriVox

Posted on November 9, 2011 by | Posted in News, on the web, Uncategorized | Comments: 15 Comments on iPhone Apps for LibriVox

LibriVox itself doesn’t produce any apps for the iphone, but we have an open catalog platform and all our books are free, so many others have built iPhone and Android apps for LibriVox.

Below you’ll find a collection of some of the iphone apps running off the LibriVox catalog (if you know of other good ones, please let us know). UPDATE: you can of course just download our audiobooks as you usually do, make sure they are in iTunes, and sync your iPhone – you don’t need an app to listen on your phone.

We’ll do a roundup of Android apps next week.

IPHONE/IPAD APPS RUNNING OFF OF LIBRIVOX CATALOG

LibriVox Selections

Producer: Iambik Audio Inc.

The LibriVox Selections app has now been discontinued. As LibriVox and Iambik founder Hugh McGuire explained, “We’ve decided to keep our attention focused on producing great new audiobooks in partnership with publishers, and the LibriVox app didn’t fit in with our focus. There are some very good audiobook apps out there already giving access to the LibriVox catalog, and we’d prefer to let app developers continue their good work, while we spend our time making more great audiobooks.

Or, you can just download the LV audio book from archive.org, unzip it, copy/paste it into the Music folder on your iPhone when syncing, On the iPhone, select the Music app, albums, and there is your LV book. Not trying to take $$ out of anyone’s pocket, but you really don’t need an app unless you are looking for a few more “whizzies”

@y2k: certainly … i updated the note above to add your comment.

  3. Erika says:

does anyone know if any of these would work on a kindle?

For users of the Android phones, there is the wonderful app Jagamaga. It offers cleaned up versions of Librivox recordings, sorted by genre, author and title. Easy to use, and getting some heavy applications on my motorola. Recommend it hearitly.

  5. Anonymous says:

Yeah, now give me the link to android

  6. And don’t forget Austreamia: http://austreamia.com ;)

  7. Stuart says:

I just visit librivox.org in Safari and play the mp3s through there. Why bother even downloading them?

  8. I just found a pretty cool easter egg that relates to this subject DIRECTLY:
If you want to stream audiobooks (I do) and have the entire library of Librivox and other free public domain content, check out the *FREE* app in the iOS App Store, “Free Music Arhive” (I know, it says, music, but stay with me here).

If you go into search, and enter in the provider (or even part of the name), such as Librivox, Community, and I am sure others, it will bring up all of the content from that provider!

And then you just put in a search for the book, reader, author, etc you are looking for. And up it comes! I wanted to listen to a different version of The Marvelous Land of Oz from Paul Harvey (not the radio guy. And no offense, Mr. Harvey, you do a fine job, but Roy Trumbull on Community Audio does a bit better), and entered in “Community” (I had found it on archive.org, they are “Community Audio”), up came “Community Audio”!

Then, I just entered in “Roy Trumbull”, in the search box for the long list of Community Audio. And then Roy’s long list of books came up. I then entered in the book title and there it was! Bad news? Mr. Trumbull never completed the high quality version of this, and the app doesn’t seem to have the completed low-fi, mp3 version. And there are none of the bells and whistles that we have on great audiobook apps (like AudioBooks, still my favorite for free content, and Audible.com for premium content).

But still, a great way to stream some great audiobooks on your iDevice.

  9. Jordan Cary says:

There is an app called Free Music Archive for iPhone/iPod touch/iPad that plays the huge selection of audio books and music from archive.org. It’s totally free. Just search for Free Music Archive in the apple app store.

  10. Michelle says:

Thanks to all who posted about “Free Music Archive”, it works great with streaming Librivox recordings.

  11. jack says:

I just want to play the mp3s from LibriVox that I downloaded from LibriVox to my laptop on my Kindle. When I try to transfer I get a message saying they may not play – and they don’t. H E L P ! I am new to kindle and to apps.

  12. Cori says:

Jack, you could try this? (From Yahoo Answers, it sounds sensible. Otherwise, please come and ask in the forum, and we’ll see what we can work out!)

Connect your Kindle to your computer and put the mp3 files in the Audible directory of your Kindle (or in a sub-directory of the Audible directory). Each mp3 file (regardless of whether it’s in Audible directory or in one of Audible’s sub-directories) will show up as a book on the main page (and is indicated as an audiobook by a speaker icon).

Any .mp3 file in the Audible sub-directory is interpreted as an audio book by the Kindle Reader.

  13. Jeni says:

What if I want them on my iPad for when I don’t have Internet access? What is the best way to do that? Is there storage space issues with these files?

  14. LibriVoxer says:

Jeni, have a look at this page in the Wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/How_To_Listen_On_Your_Apple_Device It will depend on the length of the audiobook, and how much space you have spare.
