Problems with Archive.org – Stay Tuned

Posted on August 22, 2008 by | Posted in about LibriVox, News, site & admin | Comments: 6 Comments on Problems with Archive.org – Stay Tuned

Hello Everyone,

We host all our audio files with the wonderful archive.org. The last couple of days, we’ve been getting numerous reports of LirbiVox books being unavailable, unfindable, or undownloadable. We are looking into it with archive.org – but don’t panic! We’ve had similar issues in the past, and after some hiccups, we expect things will get back to normal. Eventually. Stay tuned … and watch this space for news.

All the best,
Hugh.

Librivox Community Podcast #86 – Our 3rd Anniversary!

Posted on August 8, 2008 by | Posted in Librivox Community Podcast, News | Comments: 1 Comment on Librivox Community Podcast #86 – Our 3rd Anniversary!

This week’s community podcast celebrates LibriVox’s third anniversary, and is presented by Cori Samuel. On 10th August, 2005, LibriVox was officially launched and a week later Hugh was podcasting the news to the world — excerpted at (01:05).

The first book worked on was Conrad’s The Secret Agent, and by the end of 2005, about 30 titles had been catalogued. As of today, (08/08/08), 1,668 titles, in 22 different languages, have been completed and catalogued, and several other languages are represented within Multi-lingual Collections.

These are made up of the voices of over 2,080 readers and the time and energy also of their supporting book coordinators and proof-listeners. Books from each month of the last year are very briefly sampled … and there’s no rhyme or reason about the choices, I (Cori) just picked titles that were cool or books and authors that I like myself. A note to those who’ve recorded in languages other than English (over 12% of our catalogue!): I’ve done my best to pick out the title and author of all books or poems, but if I’ve instead picked a random piece of speech, please forgive me! (05:40-08:00, 17:08-19:58.) The opening disclaimer-medley was created by David Barnes and includes use of the splendidly echoey Greenwich Foot Tunnel.

Last week, in the podcast and on the LV blog, I asked listeners to say something about what they liked most about LibriVox, and lots of people have! In order of appearance: goosesong (read by David Barnes), Bernadette Schmitt (read by Annika Feilbach), JanniStewart, Carolyn, hugh, E, Rosie, bigbuckhunter, Landii and Mike “McDrunk” (read by Rosalind Wills and John Lieder), Ylre, Shaun C, Scotty and redaer (read by Cori Samuel), mango (speaking for himself), and Hokuspokus (read by Laura Caldwell.) You can hear Hokuspokus wishing LibriVox a happy birthday, along with Anna Simon, Karen Savage, Sirene Darktail and Kara Shallenberg. Finally, a tiny extract from the First Anniversary Show, Jemma Blythe speaking, that I just HAD to include this year too (24:05).

All non-voice sounds provided courtesy of pdsounds.org.

Happy Anniversary to all LibriVox listeners and volunteers!
