The Plot to Save Socrates by Paul Levinson
(I actually read most of this one during 2007... close enough =) ... Thought-provoking time travel including excellent historical footage. Not my favorite writing style (dialog heavy) but entertaining, nonetheless.
Island of Exiles by I. J. Parker
"A mystery of 11th-century Japan" ... I really enjoyed this book for both the mystery plot and the historical aspects.
Right Ho, Jeeves by P. G. Wodehouse (LV Audio)
Right Ho, Jeeves (LV recording) This book is a riot! Enjoyed it very much due to the pure silliness of it. Love listening to Mark Nelson!
Spook Country by William Gibson
Just so-so ... tons of pop culture references that will be outdated in a year. Interesting concept of geohacking, but not a novel's worth. Cryptonomicon-esque... but not nearly as good.
Last Night at the Lobster by Stewart O'Nan
Short novel about the day-in-the-life of a Red Lobster restaurant manager and his last day on the job. I really enjoyed the in depth details. The author provides a humorous, insightful view of 21st century working-class life.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Read in conjunction with Reading Lolita in Tehran (RLIT)... believe it or not, I had never read The Great Gatsby (GG) before. On the surface the story is rather boring and uninspiring, but immediately reading the section in RLIT regarding GG after finishing GG helped me to really understand the deeper meaning of the book and its impact on our society. GG by itself didn't mean anything to me, but having it put into perspective with RLIT made a big impression on me.
Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman
Nice blend of the two authors... not spectacular, but enjoyable.
The Madman and the Pirate by R.M. Ballantyne (LV Audio)
The Madman and the Pirate (LV recording) A pirate-y adventure set in the Pacific islands... a little too preachy for my tastes but an enjoyable story.
The End of the Alphabet by C.S. Richardson
This is an extremely short book (119 pages) about a man who finds out he has less than a month to live and what he does with his last days (essentially travel)... the sad part isn't about him dying but about how he and his wife deal with it and the power of his memories. I especially appreciate this book for packing so much emotion into so few pages.
Knitter's Almanac by Elizabeth Zimmermann
A chatty little book of knitting projects and technique that one can read like a novel instead of as a pattern book.
Persuasion by Jane Austen (LV Audio)
Persuasion (LV recording) Elizabeth Klett provides an enchanting presentation of this classic text. Somehow, Persuasion slipped through my literary education, but I am so glad that I have finally discovered it... I expect I will listen to another version of this book in the future.
Love Among the Chickens (LV Audio)
Love Among the Chickens (LV recording) Another excellent reading by Mark Nelson... and again loved the hilarity and silliness of the text.
The Lace Reader by Brunonia Barry
Incredible tangled web of a novel... part Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman, part Pocketful of Names by Joe Coomer... but I shall say no more so as not to ruin it for you.
Hen and the Art of Chicken Maintenance by Martin-Gurdon
Humorous chapters on keeping chickens.
Iron Pioneers by Tyler R. Tichelaar
Love the historical fiction set in my town but am not thrilled with the writer's style... but since he left many issues unresolved at the end of the book, I may just have to read the next book in the series.
In Progress
White Noise
Reading Lolita in Tehran : a memoir in books by Azar Nafisi
The Difference Engine by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling I'm still not sure what the point of this book was... it started out easy to read and entertaining and then it got all esoteric and boring. I'll finish it just to see if they figure out a way to pull it altogether.
