Jan Schenkman staat bekend als de waarschijnlijke bedenker van het moderne Sinterklaasfeest als pedagogisch kinderfeest. In zijn prentenboek Sint Nicolaas en zijn knecht (Amsterdam, 1850 en herdrukken tenminste in 1880, 1885 en 1907) voerde hij nieuwe elementen in als de stoomboot uit Spanje, Zwarte Piet met zak en roe, het rijden van Sint over de daken en het gooien van pakjes door de schoorstenen.
