I was looking at the comments for White Trash Land (my brother in law's novel which I recorded on podiobooks.com). One fellow REALLY didn't like my reading style. I guess I won't send him links to my music, my podcasts or my librivox readings.
| Quote: | As someone on a very low income I am very grateful to PodioBooks for giving me access to such great content, but on this occasion I have to say I would rather have read it from the page, the narrators voice was without doubt one of the most irritating and unsuitable voices I have ever heard. Speech impediments should never be allowed to stand in the way of a persons potential, it is just that this voice is not suitable for narration, I myself being a part-time actor have a modicum of knowledge as to what type of voice suits narration. The novel itself is excellent and has held my attention from start to finish, but that voice, no, no, no, my dears!

I guess a Canadian accent is a speech impediment. At least I share this speech impediment with a couple of readers I really admire, like Hugh and Esther. _________________ Sean McGaughey

What a jerk :( I'm sorry, Sean. I happen to LOVE your reading! (and singing, and playing, and speaking, and interviewing...) _________________ Kara

Part-time actor..? Ahhh, he's just ragging on the competition ... it's an unpleasant compliment, sort of. _________________ Criticism is something we can avoid easily by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing: Aristotle. . . My Saying--Doing--Being |

Good heavens. I like your reading too, Sean! The trouble is that you can have fifty people saying you're great and one person saying you're not, and the one bad review is what sticks in your head (even if it IS from a crazy person). _________________ Laurie Anne |

The finest voices in the world are criticised and criticised often for their portrayals. As a singer you'll know that once you shove your head over the top of the trench someone will try and shoot it off. It's what folk do.
Other folk are nice and say nice things.
If one we could retrain ourselves to view the nice things on a par with the unpleasant then life would be fine.
Doesn't Buddhist philosophy have a lot to do with the world being a collection of perception and we change the world by changing our perception. Alan, is that the case?
Chin up Sean
You add a lot to the world.

Yeah, goodness, what a moron! Can't tell the difference between a different accent and a speech impediment. This may be the key to why he's only a PART-time actor. _________________ In my experience, nothing ruins a party like someone suddenly speaking Latin in reverse.

Ecology begins at home. Recycling is reinvigorating trash of all kinds. If you can't recycle good things, hold onto them for awhile. When you're in a good frame of mind and you think the time is right, let 'em free.
I like your readings Sean, even if you are a singer (and a Canadian.)
I rarely have time to read, but I do listen to hours of audiobooks weekly (as a commuter.) I spend careful time (and sometimes money) A. Finding a book I like. And B. Finding a book I like that's been read by someone whose voice I feel helps me to connect with a story. Along the way, I never remember finding a reason to say anything to anyone about how I heard a lousey performer today --be they professional, LibriVoxian, or even a Canadian podcaster. And that's saying a lot: I mean, after all, I've been a professional, semi-professional, amature, and community actor for 45+ years. That gives me the right to hack someone I don't know to pieces, doesn't it?

I make it a rule never to pay attention to the views of people who don't know how to use apostrophes.
Plus, he's just darn wrong!

Thanks guys. I've been around a bit and have a fairly thick skin, so it only bummed me out a bit.
But, the tremendous show of support here and on twitter has given me quite a lift.
Thank you everybody for your kind words and support. _________________ Sean McGaughey

And here the curious notion of 'only certain voices being "suitable" for narration' raises its ugly head again. Fortunately we've managed to prove that one wrong many times over, in this project. _________________ "Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. If this person doesn't like your voice, Sean, I'd hate to read what they would say about mine. Rude, rude, rude. |
