|
|
This project is now complete and can be downloaded from the LibriVox catalogue: http://librivox.org/the-origin-of-species-by-charles-darwin/
The Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection; or, the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. Sixth London Edition, with all Additions and Corrections.
By Charles Darwin, M.A., F.R.S.
Target completion date: 28 February 2007
Gutenberg e-text: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/2009
This is difficult reading, it is college level, or beyond; it is a serious, sober, scientific text, it was not written to be entertaining, and sometimes it is quite disinteresting. Please be aware of this when claiming chapters, and be committed to finishing the chapters you claim.
(To claim a chapter, please post your selection in this forum.)
(BC admin link)
At the Beginning of the Chapter Say:
- "This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox.org"
- If you wish, identify yourself, by saying as much or as little as you are comfortable with, of:
"Recorded by Your Name, City, Web Address, The current Month and Year"
- Then introduce your recording by saying:
"The Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection; or, the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. Sixth London Edition, by Charles Darwin, Chapter Number ??, chapter title"
At the end of the chapter say:
- "End of chapter ??"
- If you happen to be reading Chapter 15, add: " End of: The Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection; or, the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. Sixth London Edition, by Charles Darwin; thank you for listening."
Include the tedious initial list of chapter contents but please for the love of all that is Holy and good introduce it with the words "Contents of this chapter include: ... and leave a pause afterwords. Otherwise the listener will hear the chapter title, and expect to get into the text, but instead be submitted to a bewildering array of seemingly random text for the first 30 seconds.
DO continue to make sure that you are providing a logical break between the end of one subchapter, and the announcement of the next; I continue to think that this is the most important part of all of this.
Questions regarding pronunciation:
Take a listen to Betsies remarkable recording of the glossary. If there is a word you are still wondering about after listening to the glossary feel free to ask.

There you are.
There is a section before the table of contents, that is little more than a review of the literature – PLEASE do not read that as the introduction. Just ignore it. Maybe we will append it to the glossary.
And Betsy – if you are serious I will gladly give you the glossary – but I will be confused. Very confused. _________________ SteveAndersen.com |

heh.. it's already recorded...with much help from my scientific husband. I now have an hour and a half recording... it will be very interesting to see how long it is after editing as I had to read and re-read many portions with revised pronunciations... hopefully with the correct-est pronunciations *grins*
There is also a little paragraph that preceeds the glossary which reads like an editor's note (though is not noted as such) ... to include or not to include? _________________ Multiple projects lead to multiple successes!

You are referring to the paragraph of thanks to Mr. W.S. Dallas...
Include. It explains – at least in part – why we might be including the glossary
VERY confused. _________________ SteveAndersen.com |

Yes, that's the one... "Mr. Dallas has endeavoured to give the explanations of the terms in as popular a form as possible." ... it is, indeed, very readable and written in understandable language. _________________ Multiple projects lead to multiple successes!

Yes, I had thought of that... I'll do my best to get it completed in the next couple of days... I'll see if I can also put together a mini index for the file so that readers will know approximately at what timestamp to look for the beginning of a range of words (i.e. A - 03:25, B - 10:43, etc.) _________________ Multiple projects lead to multiple successes!

As I currently work on statistical genetics, I have to read a chapter. Please give me Chapter V - Laws on variation. You could also ask ceastman, his profile says that he is a molecular biologist and he might perhaps also be interested to read something.
What shell we do with the subchapters? Probably not to read them all at the beginning of the chapter. But do you want us to signify them somehow (e.g. "Subchapter 1: Effects of changed conditions"), or just to read the title of them? |

That is a fine question Raynr, I think you are spot on with dropping the subchapters from the beginning of the chapter, its sort of like reading the table of contents.
I don’t think that the subchapters need to be enumerated though. I think that as you are reading the text, and come to the close of one subchapter, just pause to create a break in the text, announce the title of the next subchapter, pause, and go on. That should be easy to follow – the key is creating the logical break in the text and announcing the title. _________________ SteveAndersen.com |
