* * * * * known earlier as August Docurama * * * * *
* * * * * in celebration of Another Year of Here * * * * *
-----------------------------------------------------------
Dear LibriVoxers, in this thread, please ...
* post links to helpful tutorials you've found online,
* make suggestions for needed tutorials and guides,
* and especially make announcements about wiki pages you're creating or updating
-----------------------------------------------------------
Though this effort gotta be ongoing, the initial, August 2006 Update-ification of the guides was inspired by the LibriVox new year, which also inspired this little poem, if you will...
On August 10, 2005
a great idea came alive:
from hugh to you, her, him, me, too,
it grew to blossom and to thrive.
In August of two-thousand-now you
notice we've a hundred how-to
documents -- it is immense,
the pile that newbies plow through!
If we would all just
take this August
to uppen the dates and freshen the sawdust,
our guides and our stickies,
our web and our wikies,
would glitter and glember by this time September.
This LibriVox poem is in the public domain. _________________ Anita

I've freshened up a wiki page on how to get your files to LibriVox:
http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/HowToSendYourRecording
Would anyone have time to look it over and suggest additions/ changes/ deletions/ jokes/ illustrations ? If you can wiki, you're welcome (of course!!) to directly improve the page. Advance thanks!! _________________ Anita

You're so gifted, Anita.

Lovely poem, Anita.
Would you like to add the FireFTP option for those using the Mozilla Firefox browser? Here's the link: http://fireftp.mozdev.org/
It's a free ftp add-on for Firefox. I've had no trouble with it at all. _________________ Laurie Anne |

I second the FireFTP addition. It's free, easy to use (runs in a new tab within firefox) and has good documentation http://fireftp.mozdev.org/help.html _________________ "Where the human mind cannot explain or prove, there it invents; preferring a semblance of knowledge to its total absence." - Ribot |

Great! Thanks, Laurie Anne, Jo -- so it's cross-platform then, too, huh? Thanks thanks. Will add. _________________ Anita

Any more suggestions for the How to Send your File to LibriVox wiki page?
http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/HowToSendYourRecording
Planish had some observations about the Magic Window/Box that will help us polish it up a wee bit:
http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9812
If you've been meaning to write or add to a wiki tutorial about any aspect of recording or prooflistening or editing, this is a great time give it a go. _________________ Anita

I've begun updating this page in the wiki:
http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/HowToRecord
And I invite your assistance, questions, suggestions. Those who wiki, dive in if you want! Those who don't want to edit the wiki but want to make suggestions -- please do!
Our how-tos are at the very beginning of update and consolidation... should be looking very good by month's end, but may be like a house being remodeled in the meanwhile. Oh, and this is a All-Help-Appreciated project, a Anyone-Who-Wants-To-Can-Help--Thanks! project. _________________ Anita

Another excellent suggestion:
http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9831
to use an external stylesheet rather than embedding our style on each forum page (and web page? must go look)
Our August DOCURAMA title focuses on updating the documentation around here, but the push is broader than that -- it's a push to clean up, straighten up, spruce up the place. So this stylesheet suggestion is another excellent clean-up idea. _________________ Anita

go anita!
I'm planning to go thru the non-wiki stuff on the main site (eg public domain etc)... guess we should make sure that the wiki and main site agree with each other. _________________ hughmcguire.net |bookoven.com |

Remember to archive the old stuff for historical purposes. _________________ http://librilang.org |

ya think? oh, all right then. [hee hee]
ChrisHughes, hmm... I'll try to do just that (archive, historical purposes)... ah! I have a thought for how, yes, yes. good.
Note to all: Gesine and I are making a first pass through two major sections of the wiki pages -- Gesine tackling the organizational pages while I tackle the tech ones (recording, editing, like that). We're trying to consolidate some pages, fill in gaps, update the out-dated, and get a sort of ... complete first pass made on these pages. It involves working on several pages simultaneously, and when that's done we'll love feedback and all the extra help you'll be up for offering. <twinkle-eyed smile> _________________ Anita

Hey Anita and Gesine,
this is a challenging project I'll be happy if I can help you!
(@Anita: I simply LOVE your poem!!!)
I just stumbled over this thread and thought it very funny that August should be the month of cleaning and updating the wiki - especially as I made my very first attempt at wiki-ing on Friday...
For everyone who's interested, take a glimpse at: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/PDPictureSources

Steffi, thank you!!
Starlite pointed out to me your great new page ... and I couldn't figure out where to link it from, and realized I needed to change the first wiki page to add something about pictures and CDs and... well, we still have to figure out what the best way to organize that would be. (Reminds me -- must get higher level access in order to edit that top page)
It will be great to have your help!!
While we're going through the first pass, my own wish would be to have feedback on any page you find particulary important to update. Perhaps you could make a wiki page of clean-up commentary, where you could link to a page, copy and paste or otherwise refer to confusing / out-dated parts, or even point out what's particularly clear or helpful in existing pages so we'll have good examples, as well.
I'm not wiki savvy myself -- oh, I can wrestle the code, but I only know the basic functions. Gesine's the whiz.
More tomorrow! _________________ Anita

Hi Anita,
Enjoyed listening to you on LVCP.
I very much enjoy http://www.transom.org/
Transom.org is an experiment in channeling new work and voices to public radio through the Internet, for discussing that work, and encouraging more.
I just started using Audacity, and found (but have not yet read) this:
http://www.transom.org/tools/editing_mixing/200404.audacity.html
So I guess I'm trying to give a little to get a little
What d'ya think?
Thanks,
