1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
   To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

3. Is there a deadline?
   Target completion date of this project: July 31, 2008 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.

   There are links to all of the sections below, as well, for ease of use. It is preferable to use the links below, because I have included the "Key to Exercise" after each exercise. If you use the link above, you have to look up each Key to each exercise individually.

   Set your recording software to:
   Bit Rate: 128 kbps
   Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
   
   
   
7. DURING recording:
   Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
   Start of recording (Intro)
   • "Lesson [number] of "The Esperanto Teacher". - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
   • If you wish, say:
     "Recording by [your name]"
     
   • Say:
     "The Esperanto Teacher - A Simple Course for Non-Grammarians, by Helen Fryer. [Lesson #]"
   
   End of recording
   • At the end of the section, say:
     “End of [Lesson #]"
     If you wish, say:
     "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
     
     If you read from the main text above, after reading each lesson, go to the "Key to Exercises", say"Key to Exercise" and then read the relevant key. If your lesson is divided into two parts (e.g. 8 and 8a, then read the key to 8 after 8 and then the key to 8a after 8a). All of this is already laid out in the link to each section
     
     
   • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
     "End of The Esperanto Teacher, by Helen Fryer."
   
   Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!
   
   Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
   
   
8. AFTER recording:
   Need noise-cleaning?
   Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
   
   
   Save files as
   128 kbps MP3
   esperanto_teacher_##_fryer.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (e.g. esperanto_teacher_01_fryer.mp3)
   ID3 V2 tags
   (To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3 )
   Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

BEFORE VOLUNTEERING:

You don't need to be an Esperantist to volunteer. You can be a native speaker of any language. But volunteers will need to read Esperanto words and sentences. So, if you are not already an Esperantist or familiar with the language to some degree, it is recommended that you listen to the LibriVox AudioBook of "Dr. Esperanto's International Language" by L.L. Zamenhof:

In particular, listen to Sections 03, 05, 06, and 07, which should give you a feel for the sound and structure of the language. It would also be useful to read the relevant section on pronunciation in "The Esperanto Teacher".

It is important to remember that:

(1) You should always stress the second-to-last (penultimate) syllable. So never say ES-per-an-to or es-per-an-TO: say es-per-AN-to.
(2) Every letter has only one sound. There are no silent letters.
(3) If you're English, try to sound the letter "r" (preferably rolled). It's not silent in Esperanto.
(4) If you know any Spanish, Italian or Latin, that would help. Try to pronounce the vowels like that. Alternatively, if you know how to put on a fake Italian or Spanish accent, try to use that.

Composerscott did a fantastic job organizing the text for the reads on this project ( I think this is why he got such a great response to it )

I myself have adopted this policy for collabrative projects ....

1 thing I added is a calculation for est reading length at 130 - 160 wpm...

Highlight text in a word processor and use tools>word count .... this will give you a word count for the section and then divide by 160 and 130 to get the times for read range 130 wpm to 160 wpm ....

Thanks Robert.

I'll look into that. But first I need to figure out how to set up that Magic Box and I need an MC.

BTW, do you think we should read the key to exercises for each lesson (i.e. the English translation of the Esperanto text)? I'm not an expert on pedagogy or language learning methods. Or do you think it's sufficient for them to figure it out for themselves through the vocabulary given in each lesson?

As for the Magic Box the MC will set that up and whoever MC's the project will be the best source of info as to how to navigate the MB ...

Its really simple and very intuitive ... it has a quirk or 2 but you'll get it down fast !!

Hi Nicholas... the Magic Window (MW) is now installed.... and you're off and running. Since you have done a solo project I am assuming that you know how to use the MW... but if not, let me know and I'll send you instructions. You'll want to enter the titles for each section so that the readers know where to begin and end their recordings (but I'll bet you had already thought of that =)

Also, for server space, here are a couple of options:

1) You can collect the files and proof-listen to them yourself... and then when the project is ready for cataloging you can upload them to our system from your local computer (the drawback is that there won't be a back-up copy on a server if something happens to your machine).

2) You could ask someone with server space to set you up with uploading instructions as described on this page: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/HowToSendYourRecording ... ab2525, Anita (a.r.dobbs), and David (earthcalling) all have server space that they have offered to share ... contact one of them (or anyone else you know of) to see if you can use some space for this project.

I've recorded Sections 00 to 06 so far, and have posted it in the Listeners Wanted section.

If anyone is even remotely interested in volunteering for this project, don't feel shy! Learn as you go along! Most people aren't born speaking Esperanto (though there are some native speakers). Esperanto is a lot easier than you think it is. Trust me.
