Planet of the Damned, by Harry Harrison

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/planet-of-the-damned-by-harry-harrison/

This project was a solo and is now being opened to collaborators! As such, it doesn't follow the standard LV template for collaboratives. If you have ANY queries about reading for this project, please post below or PM Cori.

(Admin link)
  1. PD text source: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/21873 (please read ONLY from this source, for copyright reasons.)

  4. Original publication date: 1962
  5. Year of author's death : n/a, still living (If you are uncertain of the legality of recording this book in your country (it is only GUARANTEED to be Public Domain in the United States) please PM Cori to discuss. It's PROBABLY in the Public Domain in some other countries too, but not all, and this is based on legal theory, not documented case law and legal precedent. Cori is not a lawyer.)

    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz

This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org.
Recording by <your name> (this line is optional.)
Planet of the Damned by Harry Harrison.
    Chapter [##]

  • At the end of your recording, please say:

    End of Chapter [##]

  • Whoever gets the last chapter, please say the following instead:

    End of Chapter 19.
End of Planet of the Damned by Harry Harrison.

Please use the LibriVox Uploader to send your completed file. It's the preferred option for MCs because the files are then on the handiest server for cataloguing.
  1. Username and password =
    http://upload.librivox.org

(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)

  2. PLEASE NOTE:
Before you upload, you'll have to select the project MC's name from a list so your file will go to the right folder. This project is MCed by Cori - cs in the uploader list.

Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording! And THANKS for picking such a cool project to start LibriVoxing with!

ANY questions -- just PM me (Cori)!

I think for the two lines of the dedication, I might break up the standard intro slightly, and bracket it with a page-turn sound effect, like so:

Quote:
[usual LV intro]
Recording by John Rose.
Planet of the Damned, by Harry Harrison.
*page-turn sfx*
For my mother and father -- Ria and Leo Harrison
*page-turn sfx*
Chapter One.
Blah-blah-blah blabbity-blah...

Would that be acceptable?

One down...

Title: Chapter 01
Artist: Harry Harrison
Album: Planet of the Damned
file size: 10.3 MB
duration: 00:11:16
URL: http://northernelectric.ca/librivox/planetdamned_01_harrison.mp3

It should be fit for word-perfect listening.

[edited Nov. 21, 2007 - no it isn't. I need to fix the intro, because it doesn't follow my template and is missing my name ]

[edit Nov. 29, 2007 - intro fixed, and new mp3 file uploaded.]

BTW: The page-turn sfx on either side of the dedication is totally original. I recorded it with my headset boom mic, using a big old hard-back copy of the Science Fiction Hall of Fame Vol. 1 (which seemed appropriate). Then I changed the pitch downward about two semitones (to give it more weight) and ran it through a lowpass filter effect so it didn't sound so much like tearing.
It's here - http://northernelectric.ca/librivox/page_turn.mp3 - if anybody else wants to use it.

Thanks, Paul.
And Cori.

The next installment might take a while, because I still owe a few more sections to Oscar Wilde's Reviews - http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7320 - and that deadline is approaching.

I'm putting "Planet of the d'Oh!" on the back burner for a week or so, until I've finish my contributions to Oscar Wilde's Reviews - http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7320

Reviews appears to be a wrap, and the Summer's over. Time to get busy again.

Shoot. Either I'm getting fussier, or my recording setup is getting noisier, requiring hours of editing to clean up the artifacts.

Fortunately, my wife got a new computer (a Mac Mini), so once we get files transferred to it I get her hand-me-down (twice as fast as mine) for editing AND I get to borrow her new one for recording, and it is almost dead silent compared to the others.

Stay tuned.

Yay. My wife's brand-new Mac Mini is faster and much quieter. I'm getting much better results now, noise-wise.

New stuff (finally):

Title: Chapter 03
Artist: Harry Harrison
Album: Planet of the Damned
file size: 30.7 MB
duration: 00:33:30
URL: http://northernelectric.ca/librivox/planetdamned_03_harrison.mp3

It's ready for word-perfect listening.
[edited Nov. 21, 2007 - I fixed the intro and uploaded a new copy, file size and duration info above has been adjusted]
