The Arabian Nights Entertainments, Vol. 1 by Anonymous, translated by Dr. Jonathan Scott.

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/the-arabian-nights-entertainments-volume-01-by-anonymous/

This is the first of four volumes (which I plan to coordinate in succession) of "The Arabian Nights Entertainments". This is not the Sir Richard Burton version, it is a more plain-English translation and without the sexual overtones (not because I have a problem with sexual overtones, but because I like the plainer English!). Summary from Wikipedia:

Quote:
The main frame story concerns a king and his new bride. The king, Shahryar, upon discovering his ex-wife's infidelity executes her and then declares all women to be unfaithful. He begins to marry a succession of virgins only to execute each one the next morning.

Scheherazade agrees to marry him and each night, beginning on the night of their marriage, she tells the king a tale but does not end it so that the king keeps her alive in order to hear the next tale.

The stories proceed from this original tale; some are framed within other tales, while others begin and end of their own accord. Some editions contain only a few hundred tales, while others include 1001 or more stories and "nights."

Well known stories from the Nights include Aladdin, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, and The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor.

  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!

  3. Is there a deadline?
UPDATED Target completion date of this project: March 31, 2008 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.

  4. Where do I find the text?
    Gutenberg e-text: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/5664

  5. Please claim single sections (the numbers in the first column below)! You're welcome to read more, but please submit one section before claiming the next one.

    (Admin link)

  6. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz

  7. DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "Section XX of The Arabian Nights Entertainments Volume 1. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"

    • Say:
"The Arabian Nights Entertainments Volume 1, by Anonymous, translated by Dr. Jonathan Scott. Section XX."

    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of Section XX."
      If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"

    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Arabian Nights Entertainments Volume 1, by Anonymous, translated by Dr. Jonathan Scott."

Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!

  8. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this thread for more information.

    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
arabiannights01_##_anonymous.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (arabiannights01_01_anonymous.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

Title: ## - [Section title] (e.g., 07 - The Story of the Fisherman)
Artist: Anonymous, translated by Dr. Jonathan Scott
Album: The Arabian Nights Entertainments, Volume 1

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloging stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.

    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread):
      http://upload.librivox.org

(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: ge - Gesine
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

I'll need the following information from you when you submit a recording:
    • your name/pseudonym as you want to appear in the LibriVox catalog, and your website URL if you like. These are only necessary if this is your first LibriVox recording.
    • the file size of your .mp3 file.

Any questions?
Please post below or PM me. Smile

Michelle, Michelle! This is wonderful. I'll grab this (as MC). I owe two edits, though, so the magic window will have to wait a short while, okay? I'll do it asap.

I've added the reader list. I endeavoured to add the titles but I'm missing some, or perhaps you wanted to break up some sections. You can edit yourself, of course.

I'd be happy to store the files for you. In other projects I MC where the BC doesn't have server space, we've followed this process, which has proved quite efficient:
  1. Please upload all files to my Uploader http://librivox.gesine.org/ (please read the info on that page)
    Password upl0ad1t
I've put this info in the first post so people upload files directly; this saves one step.
  2. I receive an email from the system whenever something arrives in my Uploader. I then grab the files and move them to the project folder on my server (in this case, http://librivox.gesine.org/upload/arabian1/).
  3. When it's there, I put the Listen link into the reader list of your project (and mark the section 'complete' if you haven't already done so). I will post a quick message in the thread when I've done this.
  4. Then you can go to the folder and check that the file has uploaded correctly, by comparing the filesize. If everything is fine, the section is available and already set up for the proof-listening stage.

Does this make sense? Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you, Gesine! You shouldn't have done all that work! Don't you worry about keeping the Listen! links updated, etc., I will take care of all that since I have the URL for the dedicated uploader page.

I have broken up some of the longer chapters into parts that are more manageable...there are a couple that were 15,000+ words. I'll make changes to the magic window.

Thanks,
Michelle

I want them all! Sadly, I bet I can't take that many, can I? Let's start with The History of the Young King of the Black Isles, which is section 10. Then let's do section 18, The Story of Amene. If people aren't snatching them up like candy, I'll return. Oh, I will return.

Hello! Quick question -- I was reading over each of the stories I requested and found the following in Section 28: "The child ran after me, telling me it was not his own, but belonged mother, who was sick..." There seems to be a word or two missing between "belonged" and "mother" -- how exactly should I handle that? Am I allowed to insert the words "to his" or is that a no-no?

I'll field this, if it's OK. From a linguistics standpoint, I'd wager to say that the usage there is actually correct, it's only archaic. It may seem like words are missing, but in all actuality it's just an older structure. Sometimes people like to show off their mastery of a language, like English, by using structures that don't appear in contemporary speech, or sometimes they like to import structures like that from other languages.

My guess at the structure is this. He carried the "his" into the new clause via the "but," which used to work the same way as an "and" for the purposes of carrying words into new clauses. Then he used the old English dative, which still exists today in some cases (i.e. that does mother no good.), to eliminate the "to." It's a little confusing, and I definitely wouldn't have done it, but in a very technical sense, it's actually grammatically correct...

Ta much for the info, Brett!

If it isn't too much of an imposition, would you mind doing a li'l recording of how it should be read and post it to yousendit.com (or the equivalent)? I still can't quite wrap my mind around how it's to be done.

Here's the full sentence:
"The child ran after me, telling me it was not his own, but belonged mother, who was sick; and that his father, to satisfy her longing, had made a long journey, and brought home three apples, whereof this was one, which he had taken from his mother without her knowledge. "

If you haven't the time (or would simply rather not), I understand completely. Very Happy

Take care!

Wow, thanks, Brett. I would never have known it was proper English. Thanks for taking that one.
