Complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page:
http://librivox.org/the-handy-cyclopedia-of-things-worth-knowing-by-joseph-trienens/

The Handy Cyclopedia of Things Worth Knowing by Joseph Trienens.

  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!

  3. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: April 30, 2007 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.

  4. Where do I find the text?
    Gutenberg e-text: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/20190

  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!

    link
  6. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz

  7. DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "Section ## of [i]The Handy Cyclopedia of Things Worth Knowing. This is aLibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"[/i]
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"

    • Say:
"The Handy Cyclopedia of Things Worth Knowing, by Joseph Trienens, published in 1911. [Section ##]" Note: Do not read the section title (given as the link in the magic box). That's just for your reference and for the ID3 tags.

    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      “End of [Section ##]."
      If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"

    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Handy Cyclopedia of Things Worth Knowing, by Joseph Trienens."

Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!

  8. AFTER recording:
    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    cyclopedia_##_trienens.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (e.g. cyclopedia_01_trienens.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

Title: Section ## -- [Section Title.]
    Artist: Joseph Trienens
Album: The Handy Cyclopedia of Things Worth Knowing

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Files can either be posted here in the forum (link to your webspace) or emailed via http://yousendit.com to: reg@sti.net (if you use yousendit, it's helpful if you'll post the resulting link in this thread)

I'll need the following information from you when you submit a recording:
    - your name/pseudonym as you want to appear in the LibriVox catalog, and your website URL if you like. These are only necessary if this is your first LibriVox recording.
    - the file size of your .mp3 file.

Any questions?
Please post below or PM me. :)

Hi Rachel, glad to see you taking this on. I added it to the database and added the magic box. Will PM you the detalils to edit it.

I don't think I will be able to MC it as my busy season is approaching but wanted to give you a start on this.

Have you had a chance to look at the google doc's page? Its so easyto use - much like any doc editing software. The main difference is that you can "Publish" the doc so others can see it too. You can put the links generated by googledocs in the "notes" field of the magic box. Oh, and there is a link to the magic box right underneath it.

Quote:
At the end of the section, say:
“End of [Section ##]. [This work is presented for purposes of entertainment only, and is not to be construed as medical or legal advice.]" MC: Advice on this? I think it might be good because some of the stuff iin here is WAY OUT THERE and I wouldn't want anybody to go around thinking it was somehow all supposed to be actually useful information. Not from a lawsuit perspective, necessarily, just... I dunno. What do you think?]

An alternative might be to add "Published in 1911" to the intro start..? Then it's pretty obvious how out-of-date the advice is, and as a bonus, discreetly adds cultural context (i.e. sets it firmly pre-Great War.)

Generally, the fact that the book *is* PD is a big clue to its age, so listeners are generally expected to work out for themselves how much faith to place in it.

If you're handing out sections already, I'd like to claim Section 02 :) Don't you LOVE googledocs?

I'll assign that to you while I wait for googledocs to come back online. :) (yes, it's very handy! And thanks for taking a section!)

OK, googledocs is giving me fits right now. I don't know if it's down, or if the problem is that I accidentally interrupted an upload, but it won't let me sign in or do anything. So chapters twelve and on will be links to .doc files housed on my own server space, for the time being. If you want a section but can't open the file, let me know and I'll put it up as HTML -- or maybe I'll be able to use googledocs again by that point. :)

Sure! I'll move that to Googledocs for you right now, to make it easier on you. (they came up right after I finished adding all the URLs to the doc files. :) )

OK, that's done now. I think maybe for the advertisement sections we should go ahead and say, for example, "Section 35, Advertisements, Part One." or something similar, so that the listeners know they've moved out of the realm of helpful advice ("DON'T BE BURIED ALIVE") and into the ads. What do you think?

Yes, I think that would be good. If you want to be totally error-proof, you can paste the opening and closing disclaimer stuff right into your documents. (That's what I do when I sign up for something)

Golly, you still need an MC. I'll do it. Thanks for getting her started Starlite :)
