|
|
This project is now complete. You can visit the catalog page here:
http://librivox.org/rautatie-by-juhani-aho/
As the holidays approach and I got some free time in my hands I thought I'd read another novel by Juhani Aho.
Project Gutenberg etext #10481 http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/10481
Aho's first novel Rautatie (Railroad), considered one of his main works, is a story of an elderly couple who hear about railroad first time ever and have a hard time imagining carriages with no horses. They eventually get around to trying it out.
Edit me
Things have evolved in Librivox since I was last here but I'll study the instructions and try to catch up |

Hi Tuija! Looks like you've caught up just fine - thanks for putting everything in proper format. I'll go generate the Magic Window shortly, and PM you instructions on its use.
A few questions before you begin:
Do you have server space of your own where you can store your files? If not, you can use yousendit.com, mediafire.com, or any of the methods mentioned here to get the files to me. My email address is ceastmn AT gmail DOT com . If you could also post the resulting links to this thread, that'd be great.
I notice that you've read for us before. Can I ask you to just stop by once a month or so to let me know how you're doing and if you're still interested? (You don't actually need to have recorded anything between visits; I just need to know you still wanna do it.) <pause> Oh, you're looking to complete this in January anyway. Keen!
Looking forward to working with you!

Thanks for the warm welcome, Catharine, yes, I have some storage space of my own until I get the whole package to you - and yes, I have an intensive reading schedule in mind so everything should be ok unless I catch a cold or something... although there should hardly be danger of that since we seem to be getting a snowless Xmas in Finland this year. Sigh.. |

I'm sorry about the lack of snow! (It's par for the course here in California, of course, but.. no snow in Finland? How horrifying!)
Stay healthy - we'll get this beauty up in no time.
This project is now listed on the To Come - Solo Projects in Other Languages page.

Tuija, so glad to see you again! This book sounds like a good story.... I wonder if there are any English translations available in the public domain... I think I would enjoy reading it too =) _________________ Multiple projects lead to multiple successes!

thanks, thistlechick. I'm afraid I don't know of any translations but if I do stumble upon one I'll be sure to let you know!
So I did get the first chapter done, it can be found here http://www.tuija.tv/librivox/rautatie1.mp3

Got it! Magic Window updated with Listen link.
Spot check sounds basically okay. In future chapters, could you please leave ~5 seconds of silence at the end for every 30 minutes of recording? RealPlayer has a horrible tendency to cut off recordings early, nobody knows why.
Thanks so much!
(Anyone around here know Finnish and want to proof-listen?)

Indeed it would be neat to hear if there's someone who knows Finnish - do say hi! |

|
|
Hi -- in *theory* at least I could try and do some prooflistening - I just doubt very seriously that I'll have time to do it, and even speaking up at all seems sort of pointless, but decided to anyway.
I did listen to about maybe 5 minutes of the 1st chapter - sounds real good, Tuija's got a good, clear voice.
I quickly glanced at what sorts of stuff you're supposed to listen for as a prooflistener, of course the only thing that stuck was "long, distracting pauses". In the 1st 5 minutes or so that I listened to there was one such pause, so I'd assume there will probably be more, but as I say, I can't really promise anything in the way of my services. Just wanted to basically say that yeah, there's someone here who understands Finnish, Tuija's recording sounds really good, and there may be some breaks to listen for if you can get someone else to do it or if Tuija feels up to it.
Good luck with it, and if my situation changes and I end up with time to spare, I'll see what I can do!

Hi Paul - lovely to have you! Welcome to Librivox.
If you *do* happen to have time to proof-listen, please be sure to note when such pauses and stuff occur. It'll be easier to edit that way.
Tuija, what level of proof-listening would you like, if Paul's able to stay?

Hi Tuija!
We have a new policy for solo projects: if soloists fail to check in after two months, their project will be deemed Abandoned. Any files that have been generated may be used if someone wishes to start up a collaborative project. MCs will contact their soloists after one month of no contact with a reminder. (That's this message.) If you've recorded files and later choose to come back to a project, that's okay - it can be brought back, just ask any MC. This policy is not intended to push anyone; it simply makes lives more simple for the MCs.
I'll PM you this information, and email it to you as well.

The new policy is a good one. I guess it can happen too easily that one believes to have more time than they end up having.
Is it ok if I make a new realistic schedule goal to July? I still intend to finish the project, some things just came in the way as they sometimes do
I'd appreciate the kind of proofreading that helps locate anyglitzes (time code) so I can edit
And of course if there's anything to guide me what comes to presentation, that'd be helpful, too.
Cheers,
Tuija |

Absolutely! Pushing back deadlines is fine. I've done that on my solo project at least once, and I can see it's gonna need to happen again.

It's standard operating procedure to note the time of any sort of 'mistake'. It just depends on whether you want:
standard - note long repeats or silences that can be easily edited out
detailed - in addition to standard, note stumbles that can be easily edited out
word-perfect - in addition to detailed, follow along with the Gutenberg text and note any differences between what is written and what you hear. (Note: sometimes the Gutenberg text is wrong, or differs from the edition that a reader worked from!)
special - any additional feedback that a reader specifically asks for

Ur? Not quite certain what you mean by 'presentation.' If you mean reading style, it's whatever you want to do: straight read, act out emotions, different voices for different characters, whatever.

Hey Tuija,
It's been over a month since I last heard from you. Are you still interested in this project?
