Bulfinch's Mythology: The Age of Fable by Thomas Bulfinch.

This book was cataloged October 11, 2008. The audio files have been transferred to Internet Archive, and may be accessed at: http://librivox.org/bulfinch-age-of-fable/

Bulfinch’s Mythology, first published in 1855, is one of the most popular collections of mythology of all time. There are three volumes, The Age of Fable, The Age of Chivalry, and Legends of Charlemagne. This project is to record the first book, The Age of Fable. It is still quite popular, appearing twice on the 2005 OCLC list of the top 1000 books held by libraries: the three-volume set is #332, while the first book is also listed as a stand along volume, at #408.

Thomas Bulfinch’s goal was to make the ancient myths accessible to a wide audience, including children. One of the things I love about it is that it contains many bits of poetry, making it a wonderful introduction to the works of Shakespeare, Milton, and the Romantic poets.

The version I have chosen is my favorite, because it supplements the well-known Greek and Roman myths with some from northern Europe and India. I am sure everyone will find something of interest to record!

  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the blue number, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!

  3. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: Nov 1, 2008 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.

  4. Where do I find the text?
    Gutenberg e-text: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/4925
There are multiple versions available, but they often differ in the chapter numbering. Please make sure you are using text 4925. You do not need to read the footnotes, or references to footnotes or the glossary.

  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Hi - I'm Karen Merline, and I'll be looking after this project for Teto for a while. I've set a realistic new target date in November, and I will be working hard to complete this old project by then. After pm'ing the outstanding claims, there may be orphans to claim. Please help complete this long outstanding project by turning in sections as soon as possible! Thank you all for volunteering! and - please continue choosing the "ez" directory when uploading your files so they will all remain together.

As of July 16, I've recycled all the old claims and returned this book to "readers wanted". Prospective volunteers are requested to do the sections promptly, so this very old project can be published soon! - km

  6. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz preferred, 32 and 22.5 also acceptable

  7. DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"

    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"

    • Say:
" Bulfinch’s Mythology: The Age of Fable, by Thomas Bulfinch. [Chapter]"

    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of [Chapter]"

    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Bulfinch’s Mythology: The Age of Fable, by Thomas Bulfinch."

Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!

  8. AFTER recording:
    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
ageoffable_##_bulfinch.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (ageoffable_01_bulfinch.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

Title: The Age of Fable: Chapter ##
    Artist: Thomas Bulfinch
Album: Bulfinch’s Mythology: The Age of Fable

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.

    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread):
      http://upload.librivox.org

(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: ez - ezwa
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

Any questions?
Please post below or PM me. Smile

Hmm, looks interesting.
Unless another (newer ?) MC wants to, I'll add my initials up there tomorrow (I mean in about 16 hours).

Hi TetoYasha !
I've entered the project in the new catalogue system. I'll send you the info you need to edit the window and I'm off to adding this in the to come section of the catalogue.

One question about the number of sections : are you intending to have the introduction read? I'm asking because, you wrote there were 41 sections and the wikipedia link you provided has 42 (it might just be that they do not have the version you want to use).

Assuming that your section numbers correspond to the chapters in the Gutenberg text, I'd love to do #11 (Cupid and Psyche).

I'm guessing that you've typo-ed your deadline, as July 2006 is already past.

Yes Teto, please put the chapter titles in the window next to the numbers. I have been waiting for you to do so before claiming a chapter because I would like the one titled "Monsters" but I can't remember whether it was 36 or 34.

So when you've got it sorted, may I have that one please. Smile

I'm interested in the introduction, if it's not already claimed. I'm guessing that's section 00.

I didn't even tick. It's corrected.

Thanks, lotusbiosm! And welcome !
BTW, have you read our Newbie guide to recording in the wiki ?
And let us know what catalogue name you want so we can add it in.

Cheers everyone!
I've added a temporary note above the window in the first post. So that people know which sections you've already claimed.

I have read the guide for new users. I've actually used Audacity before to do some recordings for class projects and gifts and such.
Is there someone specific I should email my catalog name to, or should I just post it here?

You can post it here as everyone will see it in the catalogue anyways. Smile
You can use an alias or your real name. People have done both.
