Complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page:
http://librivox.org/the-price-of-love-by-arnold-bennett/

I've done a few collaborative recordings, but this is my first solo. I've chosen this book because it seems a nice and friendly one to start off with.

  1. Full title: The Price Of Love
  2. Full name of author(s): Arnold Bennett
  3. Link to PD text source: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/12912/12912-h/12912-h.htm
  4. Link to author on Wikipedia (if available): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnold_Bennett
  5. Target completion date (an estimate which can be changed): June 2007
  6. Short description: Rachel Louise Fleckring works for the elderly Mrs Maldon, and although with the woman for only a short time, she is taken into the heart of the family. She falls in love with one of Mrs Maldon's descendents, but along the way, she has to come to terms with the fact that he isn't, perhaps, the perfectly honest man she thought he was.
  7. Number of sections (files) this project will have: 19
  8. Does the project have an introduction [y/n]: N
  9. Original publication date (if known): 1914

Hi Chris, I'll be your MC. Thanks for using our new system; it makes my job a lot easier!

I suggest that you make your filenames price_of_love_01_bennett.mp3
and your id3 tags:

Title: 01 - Money in the House
Album: The Price of Love
Artist: Arnold Bennett

To mark your chapters complete and to add Listen links for proof listeners, click the BC Admin Link under your Magic Window. I'll send you log-in info via PM. Instructions are here if you need them:
http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dt724vw_3gtjj3b

Do you have webspace to store your files until you're done? If not, you may use my uploader: http://librivox.kayray.org password: vox

Eventually we'll need a short summary of the book for the catalog page but that can wait.

If you have any questions or problems let me know, and do please check in from time to time and let me know how it's going :)

Thanks, and happy reading!

Hi Kara - thanks for picking my project Smile

Quick question: The gutenberg text has the chapters split into four or five sections. Each chapter is going to be a single recording, but should I read out the seperations? Like: Chapter One, Part One, End Of Part One, Part Two, End Of Part Two, etc.
Or should I just read it straight through?

Hmm. Good question! It seems as if reading out the part numbers might be a bit disruptive to the flow of the story, yet the author put them there for a good reason (one hopes). I'd be inclined to skip them, and just leave a pasue as if between ordinary paragraphs, or a little longer, as if there were a row of asterisks instead of a Roman numeral. If you think the part numbers are VITAL to the story, maybe just read the beginning of each part, like:

Chapter 1, part one. Blah blah blah. Part 2. Blah blah blah. Part 3. etc.

Heck, you could try recording the first chapter that way, give it a listen, and then edit out the "part 1" business if it just didn't sound good. (ah the magic of editing!)

Happy reading :)

Well, I recorded the first couple of chapters, but when I went back to edit, I seem to have some kind of glitching problem but not on all of them. I'm going to have to investigate the audio facilities on my laptop, but I think I may have to record large parts all over again.

Oh well.

The first chapter seems to be quite long. Unedited, it came to just over an hour, so edited, it'll probably be about 50 minutes. Is that too long?

Oh, and I've found that just saying 'Part One' 'Part Two' seems to be the best way to go. It indicates the change in the chapter but doesn't seem to break it up too much.

I've just posted the fifth chapter. 5 of 19, that's about a quarter of the way through. I guess I'm going to have to rethink my target date!!

Ah, look, you've been making progress and I never noticed! How about if we find you a dedicated proof-listener?

Sounds good.

I've had the house to myself for a few days and so I made the most of it. I've now recorded all but two of the chapters, and it's just a matter of editing them all.
