This project is now complete and may be downloaded from our catalog:
http://librivox.org/paradise-lost-by-john-milton/

Paradise Lost by John Milton.

Note: ceastman (Catharine) is now BC for this project.

  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the blue number, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!

  3. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: November 24th (Caet's birthday - that means this is a SERIOUS deadline Smile ) – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.

  4. Where do I find the text?
    Gutenberg e-text: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/20

  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!

    Edit table

  6. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz preferred, 32 and 22.5 also acceptable

  7. DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"

    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"

    • Say:
"Paradise Lost, by John Milton. Book ##, Part (1 or 2)"

    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of Book ##, Part (1 or 2) "

    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Paradise Lost, by John Milton."

Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!

  8. AFTER recording:
    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
paradiselost_##_milton.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (paradiselost_01_milton.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

Title: Paradise Lost: ## - [Section title]
    Artist: John Milton
    Album: Paradise Lost

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
    Please use the Librivox Uploader:
    http://upload.librivox.org

(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
Use "ce" as the MC for this project.
Please post the link for your file in the thread!

I'll need the following information from you when you submit a recording:
    - your name as you want it to appear in the LibriVox catalog,
    - your webpage URL (if applicable)
    - the runtime of the recording in format hh:mm:ss

Any questions?
Please post below or PM me. Smile[/b]

Hi Caeristhiona, wondering if you're planning on dividing the "books" into smaller sections. I'm thinking they might be a bit long on their own.

Whatever you decide on, I'd like to grab some of Book 4, and Satan's wonderful speech!

They didn't look especially long to me when I downloaded the Gutenberg version -- but I have a couple free hours tonight. I'll take a glance after supper. Smile

Alright, yes, they are quite long. I'm splitting them roughly in half for this project. But once I get a MC (an MC?) and set this thing up I'll post the lines which begin and end each section.

Owen -- just out of curiosity, did you want the entire opening book, or just the first section, since we are now dividing the books in half?

Well, never mind the fact that you now have the possibility of MCing it yourself .. Wink

I'll MC this. Gimme a few minutes, and I'll put The Magic Window in the first post. Let's see, it's 12 books so 24 sections, right?

10 books, actually -- we are using Milton's original division. (The 12-book division came later, added by the publishers in an attempt to make it more like the 12-book-patterns of Virgil and Homer.)

So 20 sections.

Smile Thanks, Catharine. I may have the necessary superpowers now, but that should not be understood to imply that I know what I am doing.

No problem, Owen. Smile

I'm going to need your full name -- or whatever name you want to be credited in the catalog -- and your URL address, if you have your own website/blog/whatever.

ALRIGHT Y'ALL:

I have updated the reader list, and added the first and last lines of each section. As far as I can tell, neither Gutenberg edition has line numbers included, so just search for your lines within the poem and read whatever is between them. Smile

Also, Catharine, I believe I have you put down for the right section, but could you glance at it just to make sure?

Ah. I'd prefer Part 1 of Book 4, where he has that marvelous soliloquy about why he's gonna be a bad boy.

Thanks!

This is lovely, Caet. Thanks so much for putting this up. If I weren't so crap at poetry, I'd claim something! :) Look forward to listening!
