This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/how-to-speak-and-write-correctly-by-joseph-devlin

How to Speak and Write Correctly by Joseph Devlin.

  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at the sections in point 4, below. All the ones without names beside them (i.e. chapter 7) are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the blue number, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!

  3. Is there a deadline?
The target completion date of this project is January 31st, 2007 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.

  4. Where do I find the text?
    Gutenberg e-text: Link

    Edit

  5. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz preferred, 32 and 22.5 also acceptable

  6. DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
"How to Speak and Write Correctly, by Joseph Devlin. Chapter [number] [title]" (e.g. "Chapter one, Requirements for Speech")

    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say: “End of Chapter [chapter number]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition): "End of How to Speak and Write Correctly, by Joseph Devlin."
    • Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording.

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!

  7. AFTER recording:
    Save files as
    htsawc_##_devlin.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your chapter number. (e.g. htsawc_01_devlin.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

Title: ## - [Chapter title] (With proper capitalization. e.g. "01 - Requirements for Speech")
    Artist: Joseph Devlin
Album: How to Speak and Write Correctly

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Files can either be posted here in the forum (link to where the file is stored) or emailed via http://www.mediafire.com to andrew.lebrun at Google's mail service (if you use mediafire, it's helpful if you'll post the resulting link in this thread)
Alternatively, you can use http://www.yousendit.com to host the files, but that has limits on file size and downloads.

I'll need the following information from you when you submit a recording:
    - your name as you want it to appear in the LibriVox catalog,
    - your webpage URL (if applicable)
    - the runtime of the recording in format hh:mm:ss

Any questions?
Please post below or PM me. Smile

Oooh, I live on this alley.
I'll claim it as the resident slacker MC.
I'm gonna scoot it over to readers wanted and then ...
ask BaruMonkey please to set up the mp3 tags that folks should use and ... see where we want to store the files.

Got something in mind already BaruMonkey?
If not, we could store in a folder on my server -- if you have ftp software?

Lovely. Lovely, lovely.

If I've been hasty here, if you haven't decided to take on the hefty task of book coordinating, just jump up and say so. I can scoot the thread right back into Book Suggestions.

In fact, I'll wait till you reply before I go post this in the catalog list of books to come.

Very Happy Notice any enthusiasm for the project?

Chapter 2, please, if it's to be a real live project! It's about time I learned this stuff Rolling Eyes Very Happy

And in a paragraph such as the following, would I say the Transcriber's Note aloud? I'm guessing yes:

A syllable is a distinct sound produced by a single effort of
[Transcriber's note: 1-2 words illegible] shall, pig, dog. In every
syllable there must be at least one vowel.

I want to end this book.

Chapter...15, is it? The one about literature and why it is awesome?

Oh, wow, umm... heh. I hadn't considered being the coordinator for this. There does seem to be great interest in it, though, so I'm sure someone else will readily snatch up the task Laughing

P.S. -- I'll read chapter IX (Style) when the aformentioned nice person does their thing.

I would say yes.

Another section that is a bit ambiguous is where there are tables. Since the tables are small, I think it would be easy enough to read each cell along with its corresponding labels. For example:

__A_B_
1|W X
2|Y Z

Would be read aloud as:
1 A: W
1 B: X
2 A: Y
2 B: Z

Let me sleep over it and I might consider coordinating (BCing) this one.
