This project is complete. All the files can be downloaded from our catalogue: http://librivox.org/the-last-of-the-mohicans-by-james-fenimore-cooper/

The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper

  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look below at the chapters. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which chapter you’d like to read (include the blue number, please). Read below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!

  3. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: November 2007 - We'd love to get this done for "Finish in November" so please, let's get this done as soon as possible!

But please try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.

  4. Where do I find the text?
    Gutenberg e-text: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/940

Please do not include the footnotes or quotes at the beginning of chapters.

  5. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz preferred, 32 and 22.5 also acceptable

  6. DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"

    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"

    • Say:
"The Last of the Mohicans, by James Fenimore Cooper [Chapter##]"

    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of [Chapter ##]"

    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Last of the Mohicans, by James Fenimore Cooper"

Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!

  7. AFTER recording:
    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
lastofthemohicans_##_cooper.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your chapter number. (lastofthemohicans_23_cooper.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

    Title: Chapter ##
    Artist: James Fenimore Cooper
Album: The Last of the Mohicans

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.

    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread):
      http://upload.librivox.org

(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: ez - ezwa
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

Any questions?
Please post below or PM me.

Hi Rainbow,

Nice project!

I won't volunteer to MC this myself, but only because I'm about to be away from LV for a few days. Someone else will snap it up.

One thing, though. You can take out the 'track number' ID3 tag, as those are added automatically when we catalogue the project. Plus, with the introduction being 'chapter 00' (quite rightly), the track numbers will be out of synch - chapter 01 will be track 2. So best just to leave it blank and all will be fine in the end!

David

Thanks! I didn't know that it was automatically added when the project was catalogued. I'll fix that up. Smile

Hi Rainbow. This looks neat. I won't offer to MC yet and give the new MC's a chance first if they want to. I would however like to claim some chapters. it looks like a great read. I'll start off with ch 1 and look around for more later.

Hi Rainbow,

I'll MC the project if you don't mind.
I've put my initials next to the title and added the project to the to come list in the catalogue.

Starlite, thanks so much. I haven't read this book since university, and thought it was high time to look at it again!

ezwa, that's amazing! I know it'll be great working with you. Thanks!

Janice and Glidden:

Since these are some introductory posts I'm assuming that you're just getting started. If this is true, it would be a good idea to record a small amount, just a few minutes and post it so that we can help you out with any technical glitches or can give some suggestions as well. Along with that, please don't forget to read The Newbie Guide to Recording.

Other than that welcome aboard!

Janice - you've got Chapter 3.
Glidden - I can give you Chapter 2, but 3 is taken. Wink

Thanks! Though you're showing me with chapter 2 on the list instead of chapter 3.

Do we post our sample stuff to the yousendit.com site? I've actually got the chapter recorded already, but I'm a little worried about the volume level, and I'd welcome feedback.

Doy! Good job Rainbow. Embarassed I even had to change that in the message - for some reason, I kept wanting to give you Chapter 2. Brain freeze I think.

Thanks ezwa!

No worries. It happens.
What I did a few weeks ago is put the same fable title for two different sections. So I would have had the same fable twice and one missing.

If you put the resulting URL here in this thread, others can give you advice too. Smile like me
