Relativity: The Special and General Theory by Albert Einstein - translated by Robert W. Lawson

This completed project is in the catalogue at http://librivox.org/relativity-by-albert-einstein/
Great work, everyone!

I will not pretend this is an easy read. It was written, however, to be understandable to the high-school graduate, and is not completely intimidating Wink. So come on and spread the Physics love!

These have errors:

K'' (say K double prime)
K0 (say K sub zero)

I've listened to 00-03. Great work! No problem was found except a tiny one at 7:55 "...likely to arise as to its applicability in practice." and another one at 14:33 "...occupied by the stone at each...".

Section 04 The Galileian System of Co-ordinates
to Section 06 The Theorem of the Addition of Velocities employed in Classical Mechanics
[caffeinated] >>>Listen<<<
featherheadfop wrote:
A pause at about 3:40 is a little bit too long, but easily fixed (I will fix this). Also, I have not edited in the updated intro, but I will fix this also (caffeinated has already sent me the updated intro, I have just been lazy Wink ). Other than that, great Very Happy

Section 07 The Apparent Incompatability of the Law of Propagation of Light with the Principle of Relativity
to Section 09 The Relativity of Simultaneity
[peastman] >>>Listen<<<

Perfect Smile! There were a few errors in the Gutenberg text itself, but nothing that should prevent comprehension. Again, the M-Prime thing arises ...

Editing Completed

Section 10 On the Relativity of the Conception of Distance
to Section 12 The Behaviour of Measuring-Rods and Clocks in Motion
[earthcalling] >>>Listen<<<

I listened to sections 10-12, and thought they sounded good -- there weren't any problems that I could notice.

Also by the way, I thought the pace was good : ), it was easy to follow the equations without seeing them (and I enjoyed the accent!).

Section 13 Theorem of the Addition of Velocities. The Experiment of Fizeau
to Section 15 General Results of the Theory
[caffeinated] >>>Listen<<<
featherheadfop wrote:
On 13-15 : Great Very Happy! Notes: in Section 13 footnotes at about 06:24, in the equation w+v(I- (I/N^2) ) the + is read as =. I will see if I can edit this by taking another clip of you saying "plus", and see if it will fit in smoothly. If it doesn't I may need you to rerecord the equation. 12:45 for equation m (v^2/C^2) , the m is left out. (Again, should be easily fixed by me).

Section 16 Expereince and the Special Theory of Relativity
to Section 17 Minkowski's Four-dimensial Space
[featherheadfop] >>>Listen<<<
krhettn wrote:

For some reason I only hear it out one side of my headphones. Another recording by the same person (section 00) comes out both sides of my headphones, so I don't think it's my headphones, or necessarily the person who recorded it. Shrug. Anyone else hearing it that way?

Some very minor things:
MM:SS 02:54 -- The reader says "B rays" but I think it should be "beta rays."
MM:SS 05:44 -- The reader says "Therefore the theory" should be "Before the theory"
MM:SS 07:15 -- reader says "essence of aether-drift," text says "existence of."
Sorry if these are too nitpicky. Up to you if they're worth the trouble to change.

As you already said, the "T one" / "T prime" question exists in this recording too a little bit.

Otherwise the recording sounds good to me! I thought it was great the way it was clear when you were reading a footnote, and when you were back in the regular text. Are those birds in the background? : )

Part II: The General Theory of Relativity

Section 18 Special and General Principle of Relativity
to Section 20 The Equality of Inertial and Gravitational Mass as an Argument for the General Postulate of Relativity
[tina] >>>Listen<<<
featherheadfop wrote:
Heehee, Tina, just listened to your recording, 18-20 -- I can indeed hear the seagulls XD (I know one instance is at about 3:20 if you want to look for it), it's a fun addition, though, no need to be edited Wink!

Notes:
11:42 read "equal to its inertial law." should be "equal to its inertial mass." ... the Gutenberg text has this wrong, so it's not your fault, but I wonder if we should fix this, it doesn't really make sense as "inertial law"
-Again, K^1 v. K'

Otherwise perfect Very Happy

Section 21 In What Respects are the Foundations of Classical Mechanics and of the Special Theory of Relativity Unsatisfactory?

Section 27 The Space-Time Continuum of the General Theory of Relativity is Not a Euclidean Continuum

Section 30 Cosmological Difficulties of Netwon's Theory

I don't know if this correction counts, because it relates to content, but at MM:SS 06:38, the recording says "there is no room for" but the text says "there is room for." The added "no" changes the meaning to the reverse, which could be confusing. Perhaps someone wants to double check, but if this is correct, maybe the "no" could just get edited out?

I'll take section 04. [now sections 07-09]

I think your numbering is off - there are two section numbered 06!

Ah, I'll take care of that, thank you Smile. And I've put you in for section 04 Very Happy.

Hi adventurous ones,
I'll MC this slice of reality, if I may! Very Happy

It's listed under NF for No Fooling:
http://librivox.org/non-fiction/

An alternative uploader then is
http://librivox.gesine.org/uploader/upload.cgi
Please: On that page, read Gesine's careful instructions
(won't work with Internet Explorer)
password (in 2nd box on the page):
upl0ad1t -- using a zero and a 1 type uploadit

- - -
I'll give careful scrutiny to the top post in the next few days, but it looks splendid on the first read through!
I wonder just one thing ... what would you think of Title being Relativity ## [e.g., Relativity 01]?
My own iTunes sorts files by "Name" (=Title), and I typically have several chapters and a few books loaded into Library at any time. So I easily have several chapter 04s or simply 04s.

I'll ask for a bit to read, as well, after I meet a few languishing previous commitments. I love some of this language, some of the thought experiments! Mind stretch! I think we need some stereo effects. Very Happy

Don't mind me. Please carry on.
Anita

Let me know if I can help with anything!

Earthcalling has already nabbed 05, but I've put you in for 03 and 06 Very Happy. (And if you want to take another section in place of 05, you are of course quite welcome to Wink )

I have a suggestion regarding chapter numbering, which is that we try to follow the actual chapter numbers given in the book. I think that will be useful, since he frequently refers back to earlier chapters, and if we don't include the actual chapter numbers, a listener will have no way to go back and figure out what he's referring to.

For example, I'm reading section 04, which contains chapters 7-9. So rather than starting my recording by saying, "Chapter 4," I would start it by saying, "Chapter 7," and introduce chapters 8 and 9 as I reached the beginnings of them. I would then list the track title as "Relativity 07-09".

What do you think?

One fairly standard way to do this is to introduce your text as "Such-and-such a work, by so-and-so, section 07: Chapters 4 through 6. <pause> Chapter 4." and start reading the text of chapter 4.

Ah, I hadn't remembered that -- when I looked through the text the chapters were only numbered in the contents and not in the rest of the text so I had assumed the numbers were unimportant. Your suggestion is a good one Smile.
