[Chinese] Three Hundred Tang Poems － Volume 1 - 唐诗三百首卷一

This is the first attempt at a Chinese-language recording on LibriVox, so encouragement will be just as welcome as active help!

The Tang Dynasty (618 to 907) was a golden age of Chinese culture: religion and philosophy, painting and calligraphy, sculpture, architecture and music all reached peaks of perfection. Poetry was the epitome of the arts: a scholastic requirement, a route to fame, a moulder of character. Nearly 50,000 poems of the Tang have survived. The collection 'Three Hundred Tang Poems' was compiled around 1763. It comprises six volumes, with poems grouped by verse form. Volume 1 covers the 'ancient verse' style in five-character lines (poems 1 to 35), and 'folk song style verse' (36 to 45). The masters Li Bai, Du Fu and Wang Wei are well represented here.

How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are 'up for grabs'. Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you'd like to read (include the poem number, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: 31st July - but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There‘s no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen.

I guess I will volunteer unless there is an MC with knowledge of Chinese! :) I'll help you keep an eye on things here (if you go out of town or something, let me know and I'll help assign poems and collect files, etc.) And I'll take care of cataloging your poems when this volume is complete. Maybe you can help me make the catalog page :)

Oh, you know what? I'm planning to try to set up one of those spiffy librivox uploader dropbox thingies soon so maybe we can use it for the poems!

While Mike is away for the weekend, I thought I'd at least make a suggestion for the short disclaimer (see first post); this way, I can record a poem or two with a disclaimer, even if that needs to be changed a little later.

Mike - perhaps you can comment on your return.

I've recorded the first poem, and will put a link in the first post.

Mike - A quick proof-listen would be appreciated, when you have time.

This is great! And don't the Chinese characters look lovely. Western letters always look so... clumsy in comparison. :)

Here is a site which makes the Tang poems more accessible:-

There are translations (I wouldn't say they are the best, but hey), and you can click on any character in the text, on what appear to be hanging plaques, and get the pronunciation, definitions and etymology of that character.

Remember that classical Chinese was written in columns, right to left. The title of each poem is in the right-hand, shaded column; then the lines of text to the left of that.

'Three Hundred Tang Poems' is arranged in sections according to the verse form. The first section of volume 1 comprises 35 poems in the 'five character ancient verse' style. These are in lines of 5 characters, the lines forming couplets. Each character is one syllable, and broadly speaking a word.
