This project is complete and can be downloaded here from the LibriVox catalogue: http://librivox.org/sense-and-sensibility-by-jane-austen/

Collaborative Project: Please read this post carefully if you would like to read a chapter (or more) of...

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen.

Jane Austen's freshman publication, often called her weakest, is nonetheless a great novel and considered by many to be her most accessible work. I am a fan of all of Miss Austen's work, so I am happy to coordinate the reading of this novel! Here's a summary, cobbled together from Amazon reviews:

The two eldest Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, one of whom (Elinor) embraces practicality and restraint while the other (Marianne) gives her whole heart to every endeavor. When the Dashwoods - mother Mrs. Dashwood, Elinor, Marianne, and youngest sister Margaret - are sent, almost impoverished, to a small cottage in Devonshire after the death of their father and the machinations of their brother's wife, they accept their new circumstances with as much cheer as they can muster even though their brother and his wife have taken over the family estate and fortune. Marianne finds herself falling in love with the dashing Willoughby, who ends up being not all that he appears. Elinor, the more sensible of the two, falls for Edward Ferrars, a match that seems much more suitable. All of these pleasant connections are, however, soon disrupted. Willoughby leaves and ignores Marianne. Elinor finds out an unexpected secret about Ferrars that puts her on her caution in pursuing their relationship. As these complications develop, Marianne soon finds herself distraught despite having attracted another suitor, the reliable, but older, Colonel Brandon. Elinor steps into the breach to try to help her sister regain her equilibrium. Both learn what a broken heart can feel like and adjust in their own separate ways. Since this is an Austen novel and a romance, be assured that all comes right in the end.

  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are up for grabs. Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you'd like to read (include the blue number, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!

  3. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: November 30, 2006 - but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen.

  4. Where do I find the text?
    Gutenberg e-text: http://www.gutenberg.org/dirs/etext94/sense11.txt

  5. Please claim chapters (the blue numbers)!
Reader list last updated: February 27, 2007, 1:50 PM, PST

  6. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Sample rate
    1. 44.1KHz is the default sample rate in lots of software. We like getting files at this rate.
    2. Some know-it-all Wink told us that 32KHz sounds better. If you know how, try to use this rate.
    3. We want to make this easy, so we'll take any rate from 22 to 44.1KHz, if you need us to.
    4. Please don't use 48KHz or anything under 22KHz. If you accidentally send us something at these rates, our uploaders will resample it for you and advise you on how to record at a sample rate we can use. Don't worry, your work will never be wasted!

  7. DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"

    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"

    • Say:
"Sense and Sensibility, by Jane Austen. Chapter ##."

    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of Chapter ##."

    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Sense and Sensibility, by Jane Austen."

Please leave about five seconds silence at the end of your recording!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!

  8. AFTER recording:
    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    senseandsensibility_##_austen.mp3 , all lower-case, where ## is your chapter number. E.g., senseandsensibility_01_austen.mp3

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

    Title: Chapter ##
    Artist: Jane Austen
    Album: Sense and Sensibility

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Files can either be posted here in the forum (link to your webspace) or emailed via http://yousendit.com to: mcrandall.librivox@gmail.com (if you use yousendit, it's helpful if you'll post the resulting link in this thread).

***Also, there's a new way to transfer files!!!*** Laura "Fox in the Stars" has created an uploader tool. Follow instructions at this page: http://librivixen.shininghalf.com/uploader/upload.cgi (password: pubdomain) and let me know when you've done so, so I may grab them. N.B.: Laura advises that this tool doesn't work so well with IE. Firefox by Mozilla is recommended.

I'll need the following information from you when you submit a recording:
    - your name as you want it to appear in the LibriVox catalog,
    - your webpage URL (if applicable)
    - the runtime of the recording in format hh:mm:ss

Any questions?
Please post below, PM me, or email me directly at mcrandall.librivox@gmail.com Smile[/url]

Oh Michelle, I cannot resist :) May I have ch 4 & 5 for a start? I will definitely take more later after I get a bit caught up with other projects!

Thanks for starting this one!

I'm pretty over committed, but I also don't care, so I'll take 6 and 7!

Thank you all for your fast responses to my introducing this book!

Kymmz, I am very sorry to say this...but I received a PM from ElectraWoman almost the moment after I posted claiming Chapters 6, 7, 8 & 9. I would love for you to pick another two, though! Let me know, and I'll give you priority on your next pick.

Suetsumuhana, ditto, unless you want me to just go ahead and give you Chapter 10 - which I will do in the meantime till I hear from you.

Thanks again, everyone. I look forward to hearing your readings.

I didn't pick those chapters particulary, they just were the next two, just give me whatever the next next two are and I'm grand!

Can I be a pain in the neck and claim Chapters 42 and 43? If that's inconvenient I am happy to be assigned...

I'm excited about being involved in a Jane Austen reading!

Not a pain in the neck in any way. You have 42 & 43!

Thanks for volunteering.
