The King In Yellow, Part Two.
The King in Yellow, Part One can be found here: http://librivox.org/king-in-yellow-by-robert-w-chambers
I have already recorded the first part of The King In Yellow. That part contains the rather strange and creepy stories which gave the collection its name. However, in the second part of the book, the author moves away to more realistic situations, set in France. Would you be able to read from these later stories?
The book is available at Gutenberg: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/8492
Ideally, readers will need to be able to differentiate at least a little between the two sorts of accents, those of Americans and French people speaking English; should be able to pronounce the occasional French phrase ... and also be able to have a go at dialogue like this:
| Quote: | | "Ah, yess, I know, ah! mon Dieu! you do not spik Frainch but you have come to lairne! My husband does spik Frainch wiss ze pensionnaires. We have at ze moment a family Americaine who learn of my husband Frainch--" |
(which, happily, only occurs a few times in just one of the stories!).
BEFORE recording:
Please check the Recording Notes:

Sample rate
1. 44.1KHz is the default sample rate in lots of software. We like getting files at this rate.
2. We've been told that 32KHz sounds better. If you know how, try to use this rate.
3. We want to make this easy, so we'll take any rate from 22 to 44.1KHz, if you need us to.
4. Please don't use 48KHz or anything under 22KHz. If you accidentally send us something at these rates, our uploaders will resample it for you and advise you on how to record at a sample rate we can use. Don't worry, your work will never be wasted!
DURING recording:
At the very beginning of your recording, say ...
"This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
Then, if you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
Then say:
"The King In Yellow, by Robert W. Chambers, [Story Name], Part [story part number]"
***
And at the end of the recording, say: ?End of [Story Name], Part [number] from The King In Yellow by Robert W. Chambers"
... and leave about five seconds of silence after that.
***
AFTER recording:
Save files as
128 kbps MP3
king_in_yellow_##_chambers.mp3 , all lower-case, where ## is your section number (given in blue below).
ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use ? if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!
Title: [part number]: Story name (e.g. 01: The Street of Our Lady of the Fields)
Artist: Robert W. Chambers

I'll need the following information from you when you submit a recording:
- Your name and URL added to this page: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/ListOfReadersCatalogNames If you're not sure how to do this, ask and we'll gladly help
- the runtime of the recording in format mm:ss

A story of a group of Americans and their French friends in Paris during the famine times of an invasion by the German army. (The King In Yellow was published in 1895, and I'm no historian, so I don't know whether this is based on an actual war.)

Yes, go for it, Cade. I've started on The Repairer of Reputations with the fragment I've uploaded but, as I said, won't be continuing with it for a few weeks. The more the merrier ... or perhaps not "merrier", with this particular book!

Comments welcome ... well, of course, some might not be, but I'll just have to take that chance!

Damn, man, I love your voice and how you're reading this. Is that your natural accent? It gives me a bit of a disconnect with the New York setting, but there's a languid, unhurried quality to your reading that has this undercurrent of uncertainty when the narrator gets to the "crazy bits." It really captures the feeling of TKIY, in my opinion.
My only negative note is that I think you were snagging a mic cord or something closer to the end -- around the 25-minute mark, I started noticing a "tinging" noise that I often get when I start absentmindedly tapping a mic stand with my finger, or bumping a cord that then taps something else. _________________ Writer, Dead Eyes Open and Man-Man |

... and here's part three of The Repairer of Reputations. This really is a rather horrible story. I'm looking forward to the next in the series; a little love story.
It was interesting letting the suppressed insanity of the narrator gradually come to the surface, with it showing in little flashes.
And, yes, this is approximately my voice, but a bit more precise in pronunciation than I am casually. I usually take the narrator or main character as my own voice to make it simpler to read. In fact, because I have trouble remembering more than a couple of characters' voices, I've taken to recording stories with just the narrator plus one voice (and including any very minor incidental characters), and leaving gaps for the other main characters, which I then fill in, one character at a time. .... so I'm desperately looking for ghost stories without any conversations in them!
Thanks for the compliments (I've also done a few other ghost stories in the short story collections, if you really do want more!) and for the sound quality check; I'll listen and correct it if I can.
Oh and The Parenticide Club was recorded before I got a sound card, so there's an uncomfortable level of background noise if you listen through headphones. I'm planning on re-recording it sometime soon.

Shepherd,
I've listened to Part Two of The Repairer of Reputations with 'phones on and have caught the noise you spotted .. on and off over about three minutes (I usually edit by listening through speakers rather than phones, and it wasn't audible heard that way - a bad habit). Although the sound *is* an irritation, I'm afraid I'm going to leave it ... unless I get a cascade of complaints (say, another one): it's the thought of converting the new file to mp3 and the long upload that's off-putting. My microphone is wedged rather crudely near my mouth on a music stand: the noise came from me brushing against the stand and not having enough padding around the mike.
For me, the worst part of that recording is the sudden shifts in volume ... they come from either me re-recording bits I'm not satisfied with and pasting them in, or me moving my head away from the mike and having to amplify small sections of the recording. Solution: I'm just going to have to blow some money on the USB mike that so many people seem to be happy with, plus I'll have a look at a better editor than Audacity.
Thanks for the impetus.
