The Soldier
by Rupert Brooke (1887-1915)

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/the-soldier-by-rupert-brooke/

Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible! This poem was written as the First World War broke out in 1914, as the concluding part of a series of sonnets. Brooke, himself, died the following year on his way to a battle at Gallipoli.

Please be sure that your recording software is set to the following technical specifications:
Channels: 1 (Mono)
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44100 kHz

Have questions on "how"?
Check LV's Recording Notes thread before recording: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430
If this is your first recording, you'll also find this useful: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/How_to_Send_Your_Recording

Leave no more than 0.5-1 second of silence at the beginning of your recording.

Begin your reading with this abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:

Quote:
The Soldier by Rupert Brooke, read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal url.]

Then read the poem:

Quote:
If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:

Quote:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.

Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.

This week's poem can be found here.

Save your recording as an mp3 file using the following filename and ID3 tag format:

File name - all in lowercase: soldier_brooke_your initials.mp3 (eg. soldier_brooke_klh.mp3)

ID3 tags (Version 2):
Artist Name: Rupert Brooke
Track Title: The Soldier - Read by YOUR INITIALS (eg. The Soldier - Read by KLH)
Album Title: LibriVox Weekly Poetry
Comments: (optional) Recorded by [your name]

Transfer of files:

Please upload with the LibriVox uploader:

http://upload.librivox.org

If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: rg - RuthieG

Please post a link to your file in this thread.

When you post your link, please include your name as you would like it credited on the catalogue page and any URL by which you would like it accompanied. (Note: This is only necessary if you have not done so for another project.)

If you wish to contribute, please have your readings submitted by 0600 GMT Sunday, 15th November (12:00AM CDT)

(And remember, anyone can suggest a poem for a certain week and/or coordinate an upcoming weekly poem! If you'd like to suggest a poem or coordinate a future Weekly Poetry project, please visit this thread.)

I hope it isn't too "English" for other readers. Its meaning, to me, has always been the poignancy of any soldier who dies away from his homeland.

And mine (although it seems really weird to read a decidedly English poem with a Minnesotan accent!)

Hello Ruth, Can you or can anyone help. From many years ago, I seem to
recall Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes reciting this poem at that end of
one the films made during the Second World War. He's standing at a window
gazing out at water and a cityscape. Or perhaps this scene does not exist
in this reality. Thanks, Kim
