The Type-writer Girl by Grant Allen (1848 - 1899) .

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/the-type-writer-girl-by-grant-allen/

Quote:
Summary text WILL ADD LATER (Summary by Grant Hurlock)
.
  • Target completion date: Sept 2009
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.archive.org/details/cihm_05084
  • Type of proof-listening required: Standard Proof-listening
-- Do the intro and disclaimer match the instructions in the first post of the project thread?
-- Are there any long silences or pauses that ought to be edited out? If so, note the time.
-- Are there any repeats, or serious stumbles that ought to be edited out? If so, note the words and the time.
-- Is there excessive background noise, a constant hiss or buzz that detracts from the reading?
-- Did you need to turn your volume up unusually high to listen to the recording? (Or did you find the recording too loud?)
-- Are the correct closing words used at the end of the recording, as per the first post of the project thread?
-- Are there 5 seconds of silence (10 if the recording is more than 30 minutes long) at the end of the file?

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project will be opened up to a group project as soon as a Book Coordinator can be found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to have it re-instated).

    MAGIC WINDOW:

    (BC admin)

  • The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!

    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "Chapter ## of The Type-writer Girl. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
"The Type-writer Girl, by Grant Allen. [Chapter # & title]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter ## of The Type-writer Girl. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain.
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
"The Type-writer Girl, by Grant Allen. Chapter # & title"

    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of Chapter ##"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"

    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Type-writer Girl, by Grant Allen."

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.

  • Example filename
    typewritergirl_##_allen.mp3

  • Example ID3 V2 tags
    Title: ## - chapter title
    Artist: Grant Allen
    Album: The Type-writer Girl

  • Instructions for soloist: transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.

    • Upload your file with the !LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread):
      http://upload.librivox.org

(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select an MC, which for this project is: tg - TriciaG
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

OK, I think you're set.

I changed your file name structure to just typewritergirl without "the" since that's unneeded - just makes the file name longer. Smile

One shortcut: If you fill in the section titles in the Magic Window the way you want them to be in the MP3 ID tags, you don't have to worry about making them in the MP3 export, because it's a one-click operation in the validation/cataloging stage to import the section titles from the MW into the title tags of all the MP3's.

(Gee - I should keep that in mind for my own solo! LOL!)

We'll hang out here for a day or so and see if we can pick up a DPL.

I've added you on, Brenda. Welcome to the project!

And with that, I'm sending this to Going Solo...

Grant - could you do me a favor and put the run times in the notes of the magic window when you post your sections? I need them during the cataloging stage, and they're much easier to find there. Cool

Thanks so much!

Here are the final 6 chapters:

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/tg/typewritergirl_17_allen.mp3
Duration: 24:32

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/tg/typewritergirl_18_allen.mp3
Duration: 12:04

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/tg/typewritergirl_19_allen.mp3
Duration: 25:51

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/tg/typewritergirl_20_allen.mp3
Duration: 26:19

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/tg/typewritergirl_21_allen.mp3
Duration: 14:37

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/tg/typewritergirl_22_allen.mp3
Duration: 11:42

And here's my summary to go with The Type-writer Girl (including a quote from one of the characters in the story):
“There is no more pathetic figure in our world to-day than the common figure of the poor young lady, crushed between classes above and below, and left with scarce a chance of earning her bread with decency.” So says Juliet Appleton’s boss, encouraging her to put her story into print. How will this college-educated 23-year-old survive the Darwinian Battle of Life in late Victorian England? She’s fundless in London but armed, by way of adaptive structures, with those two high-tech devices of the day: a bicycle for mobility and a typewriter for utility.
