The Life Of Charlotte Bronte Volume 1, By Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/the-life-of-charlotte-bronte-volume-1-by-elizabeth-cleghorn-gaskell/

Quote:
Charlotte Bronte was a British author, the eldest of the three famous Bronte sisters who have become standards of English literature. She is best known for her novel Jane Eyre, one of the greatest classics of all times. Just two years after Charlotte's death, her friend Elizabeth Gaskell wrote her biography. Want to know more about Charlotte Bronte? If you do, please read this biography. Summary by Stav Nisser.

[1][*]How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply"
at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

[2]New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!

[3]Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project:– April Twenty First 2009 (Charlotte Bronte was born on April Twenty First 1816) but try to send your recordings as soon as you can.

Please note that if we haven't heard from you for two months, your section(s) will automatically be re-opened for other readers.
30-day rule: If I do not hear from you at least once every 30 days after claiming a section, it will go back into the pool. This does not mean that you must submit your section(s) within 30 days, it only means that you need to check in and let me know how things are going.

If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.

[4]Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!):
http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/1827

Footnotes: Please read the footnote immediately after the sentence to which it refers. Say "Footnote" then read the footnote (omitting number). Then say "End of footnote."

[5]Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level
of prooflistening requested:
Standard Proof-listening
• Do the intro and disclaimer match the instructions in the first post of the project thread?
• Are there any long silences or pauses that ought to be edited out? If so, note the time.
• Are there any stumbles or repeats that ought to be edited out? If so, note the words and the time.
• Is there excessive background noise, a constant hiss or buzz that detracts from the reading?
• Did you need to turn your volume up unusually high to listen to the recording? (Or did you find the recording too loud?)
• Are the correct closing words used at the end of the recording, as per the first post of the project thread?
• Are there 5 seconds of silence (10 if the recording is more than 30 minutes long) at the end of the file?"
• And another request: if a new reader submits a test recording, please listen to it.

MAGIC WINDOW:

(BC admin)

[6]BEFORE recording:
Please check the Recording Notes:
http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

Set your recording software to:

Channels: 1 (Mono)
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz

[7]DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
Start of recording (Intro)
  • "Volume 1 Section [number] of [The Life Of Charlotte Bronte]. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
  • If you wish, say:
    "Recording by [your name]"
  • Say:
"The Life Of Charlotte Bronte, by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell. [Volume 1 Section [number]"

End of recording
  • At the end of the section, say:
    End of Section [number] "
  • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
  • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Volume 1 of The Life Of Charlotte Bronte, by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell."

Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!

[8]AFTER recording:
Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

Save files as
128 kbps MP3
lifeofcharlottebronte1_##_gaskell.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (e.g. lifeofcharlottebronte1_01_gaskell.mp3)

ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

Title: ## - [Section title]
Artist: Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell
Album: The Life Of Charlotte Bronte, Volume 1

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
  • Upload your file with the
LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread):
    http://upload.librivox.org

(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: rg - RuthieG
  • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How
To Send Your Recording wiki page
    .

Any questions?
Please post below or PM me.

More than a year ago, volume 1 of this book has been started as a solo. Only one chapter has been recorded. The reader is Brontefan. Here is a link to this chapter:
http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/discontinued_solos/lifeofcbronte/thelifeofcb_01_gaskell.mp3
Time 16.33
Jo was the mc.
Ruth or Jo, would you be able to take this chapter to the project's folder and post it in the magic window?
I pled it, it sounds ok to me, may be a little to quiet. When we have a dpl, I would b very happy if he/she would pl this chapter again. After all, the reader is not around and I want to make sure that everything is ok.
Anne, can you count the words in the next chapters? If not now, would you be able to do this after Ruth sets up the magic window?
Stav.

Stav,

I've amplified the file for chapter 1 and removed a bit of the background hum as well. I've renamed it to your filename convention and moved it over to Ruth's folder for you. Here's the new link:

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/rg/thelifeofcharlottebronte_01_gaskell.mp3

The tags will need to be updated, but Ruth can do that for you when this is cataloged. I also still have the original on my computer in case it's needed.

Good Luck with the project. I'm glad you will be able to make use of this file.

Jo

Thank you, Jo. I am very happy to use this file, and to bc this project.
By the way, would you like to read a chapter (or more) from this book?
Stav.

THe word counts in the chapters range from 696 to 17,392 - so I am going to have to split some of them . I'm very new at this BCing so need some advice on what size is too big ? Should I split the 8000 word ones ? How about the 7000 word ones ?

Hi anne,
I think the chapters with 8000 words should be split into 2 parts, and those with more than 10000 words should be split into 3 parts. The one with more than 17000 words should be split even into 4 parts. About the chapters with 7000 words... I don't really know. I don't know if readers would take chapters with 7000 words, it is quite a big task.

I'll be back with the Magic Window later, when I've worked out roughly how many sections you are going to need, Stav.

Ruth,
please make it 40 for a start. If we'll need to change this, we'll do that.

I thought about it again. As the chapters are so long, let's do it in 2 volumes. I am going to change my first post accordingly.

As we are doing volume 1, we would need 20 sections.

Very wise, I think. OK, 20 sections for Vol 1, then.

You will need to decide how you want the footnotes handled.

Also, I think it might be a good idea if it there were a note in the MW for any section that includes long sections in French.

About the footnotes, I think I would say this thing:
if they are important for the plot, let's read them. If they are not, they should not be read. If the are read, they should be read at the end of the paragraph. The reader would say "footnote for the sentence..." and "end of footnote".
If you think that this is to complicated, let's read the footnote right after the sentence. The reader would say "start of footnote" and "end of footnote".
What do you think?
Stav.
