The Perils of Pauline by Charles Goddard (1879-1951)

Quote:
The Perils of Pauline is one of the first damsel in distress serials. The story is complete with undaunted hero, courageous damsel, unscrupulous villains galore, and other worldly interest. Before getting married, Pauline wants to experience the world and have adventures. When her guardian dies and leaves her an estate in trust of his secretary, adventures suddenly become more hazardous. Pauline charters aeroplanes, meets untrustworthy pirates, braves dangerous China Town, flies in a hot air balloon, adventures in the Wild West, encounters international spies, and escapes many other perils with the aid of her would-be fiancé, Harry, and an Egyptian mummy. (Summary by Carolyn Frances)

Volunteers outside the USA: Charles Goddard died in 1951. His work is still protected by copyright in places, like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years.
  1. Is there a deadline? no
Target completion date of this project: 12/31/2009 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
  2. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a role to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which role you’d like to read. You can read multiple roles if you are not reading one of the 4 main roles. When signing up for multiple roles, please choose roles that are not in the same chapters or in back-to-back chapters. Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/6065 Individual links will be in the MW for each chapter with parts highlighted for easier reading.
  5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! A list can also be found here. (S=Supporting role, M=Main role, F=Featured role, and E=Extra.) Please include the following text when you post to claim a part:
    Quote:
By uploading my recordings to this project, I dedicate them to the public domain.
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

    (BC admin)

  6. BEFORE recording: Please check the Recording Notes: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430
    Set your recording software to:
    Channels: 1 (Mono)
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
Save your file in WAV format.
    Submit one file per chapter.
  7. Make sure you add this to the beginning of your recording:
[Role], read by [your name]. And leave 3 seconds between line breaks when you record to aid editing. Please remember to post your public domain dedication in the thread as noted in point 5.
I will be reading the narration and will include the following:
At the beginning: The Perils of Pauline , Chapter [#] by Charles Goddard. This is a Librivox recording. All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit Librivox dot org. Chapter [#] - [Chapter Title]
At the end: End of Chapter [#], [Chapter Title]. At the end of the book, add End of The Perils of Pauline, by Charles Goddard.
Please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  8. AFTER recording:
Save files as 128 kbps WAV
Sample filename perilsofpauline_[roleasoneword]_[##].wav (all lower-case), where ## is the chapter number.
ID3 V2 tags: Not needed for individual parts.
    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread): http://upload.librivox.org

(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: rd - russiandoll
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

Any questions? Please post below or PM me.

I would love to voice Pauline. However, I'm open to voicing multiple other parts if doing so would better serve your project.

I'll volunteer for Ensign Ben Summers. I like the idea of playing a torpedo designer!

And he's being seduced by a beautiful spy!

Here's a plot teaser that goes chapter by chapter:

Hi litlmiss - I'll MC this. Be back a bit later with the MW.

One thing to flag up, though: because Goddard died in 1951, he's not PD for me (life + 70), so I won't be downloading the text or listening to the recordings. Shame, as it sounds fun!

rd

Edit - ok, I think you're good to go. I've taken the liberty of slightly tweaking the set-out of how you've asked for files to be named, just for clarity for newer contributors, and added the author's dates and copyright warning. You have a MW access password, right?
I'll move us over to Dramatic Works later. I've tagged this as fiction, adventure and romance in the genres we have available to choose from in the catalogue. If you think any should be added or changed, let me know. Smile

Hm. I have a BC password, but it is not letting me in to this project. Would you check the set up and PM me the password just to be sure? Thanks.

Karen - You haven't recorded anything yet so I need to add you to the catalogue. How would you like to be listed and do you have a web page you'd like referenced?

Sorry, litlmiss, my mistake Embarassed. Glad jo was able to help you out swiftly.
Moving to Dramatic Works...

Edit - just realised I've been mis-spelling you, ltlmiss, and must have done so in the catalogue entry too, which is why it ignored me. Rolling Eyes Apologies again.

Looks like New Zealand copyright is 50+ years from death of author - so you're good! Glad to have you. Your character, Mary Haines, is from Montana in the USA (don't worry about accents) and met Pauline on her honeymoon if I remember correctly. She's a lovely down to earth woman. Smile

As you record leave about 3 seconds between lines or where the line gets interrupted so we can edit it into the narration. I would also encourage you to do a quick poem for the short poem collection to get used to the recording equipment and the Librovox system - as a practice piece before you start on this one.

One other thing - I need to know how you want to be listed in the catalogue and if you have a website you'd like us to link to. To see what the catalogue page will look like, you can click on the Recordings link in my signature.

Can I have section 049, Jenkins the butler; as far as I can tell, he didn't do it, so there shouldn't be a conflict of interest here Razz
