PostPosted: Wed Feb 08, 2006 1:53 pm    Post subject: COMPLETE: Don Quixote (Vol. 1), by Cervantes - AF/ge Reply with quote

This project is now complete and is available from the LibriVox catalogue here: http://librivox.org/don-quixote-vol-1-by-miguel-de-cervantes-saavedra/

Collaborative Project: Please read this post carefully if you would like to read a section of

Don Quixote, Volume 1 by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Translated by John Ormsby.

This book will recorded in the English translation (by John Ormsby). I'm also coordinating a reading of the Spanish original. If you'd prefer to read Don Quijote in Spanish, or if you can read both, please head over here: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1271
When Volume 1 is recorded, I'll start new projects for Volume 2.

(Note: I've tried to make this easy and comprehensive for new readers. If anyone has any questions, please email me at justgesine AT yahoo DOT co DOT uk)

  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 4. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are 'up for grabs.' Post a reply and tell us which one youd like to read (include the blue number, please). Read sections 5. to 7. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

  2. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: 31 October 2006 - but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. Theres no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen.

  3. Where do I find the text?
    Complete Gutenberg e-text, comprising volumes 1 and 2: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/996
I would recommend using this Gutenberg html e-text of Vol 1 (which has links to Volume 2 within it), it sports links to the individual chapters, and has photos of a very nice old illustrated edition: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/5921

  4. Please claim section numbers (the blue numbers)

Note: Most of the 52 chapters are very short, perhaps 5-10 minutes to read. I have therefore kept the sections to the original parts of the book, most of which contain more than one chapter, as indicated.
Pronunciation: If you have any questions, just hop over to the Spanish reading (http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1271) and post there!

    (BC admin link)

  5. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430
If this is your first recording, you'll also find this useful:
    http://librivox.org/about-recording/

  6. DURING recording:
IMPORTANT! Please make sure you record at a sample rate of 44,100!
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"

    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"

    • Say:
"Don Quixote, Volume I; by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Translated by John Ormsby. Part [Part number], Chapter(s) [chapter number x (to y)]"

    End of recording
    • At the end of the part, say:
      End of Part [part number]"

    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Don Quixote, Volume I; by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Translated by John Ormsby."

Please leave a couple of seconds silence at the end of your recording!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!

  7. AFTER recording:
    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
quixote_vol1_#_cervantes.mp3 , all lower-case, where # is the blue number above (NOT your part or chapter number!). (quixote_vol1_01_cervantes.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

    Title: Part #: [Title (e.g. Chapters 4-5)]
    Artist: Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
    Album: Don Quixote

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Files can either be posted here in the forum (link to your webspace) or you can upload them to my server via the LibriVox Uploader: http://librivox.gesine.org
    Password: upl0ad1t
If you have problems using the Uploader, please let me know.

I'll need the following information from you when you submit a recording:
    - your name as you want it to appear in the LibriVox catalog,
    - your personal webpage URL (if applicable)

Any questions?
Please post below or PM me. :)

Have fun with this project!

If you don't mind having a newcomer on board, I'd like to take section 05 (Part 2: Chapters 4-5).

I'd like to do section 06, which is part 3, chapters 6-8, that begins in Quixote's library and ends with the tilting of the windmills.

Well - 4 sections claimed here, and 3 in the Spanish one (this one's one longer because of the translator's notes)! I'm having myself a sporting little race... at the moment, we're even! :)

Thanks, Ruben (love that name). 07 has your name next to it. Ruben. Any questions, Ruben, just let me know. :)

I'll do #2 - the poems and such, and number 8. Perhaps more if I find some time stuffed in a closet around here. Thanks so much for tackling this, I'm very much looking forward to it!

I think I'll sign up for an English chapter, and possibly for a Spanish one as well. However, please note that in the closed "book suggestions" thread (http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=12613#12613) you accidentally copied the Spanish link twice and omitted the English link.

I think I will go on Sparknotes or something like that and find summaries of the chapters, then decide which one I'd like to record. So I'll be back.

Unless someone else really wants to give it a go, I'll claim this one:
01 - Translator’s Preface, I & II (very long)

Gesine, you're not kidding that it's "very long" - at 91.5k of text, its reading time will run just under two hours. Though it's made up of two parts, the first one's VERY short and cutting it at that point won't help a whole lot, so I suspect I'll just read it all in one long piece.

I probably won't have this one ready until the weekend. I've still got an hour-plus reading from Canterbury Tales to finish before I get into this one.

I'll do these:

03 - Author’s Preface
04 - Part 1: Dedication of Part 1, Chapters 1-3

That's part of what I'm doing in the Spanish one.
